We’re removing 13 dangerous and congested level crossings on the Upfield Line, creating benefits for local communities and a better transport network.

We’ve already removed 5 level crossings on the Upfield Line, with 8 more to go for good by 2027:

  • Albion Street, Brunswick
  • Hope Street, Brunswick
  • Victoria Street, Brunswick
  • Albert Street, Brunswick
  • Dawson Street, Brunswick
  • Union Street, Brunswick
  • Brunswick Road, Brunswick
  • Park Street, Parkville

About 71,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day, with the boom gates down for up to 30 minutes of the morning peak.

Up to 16 trains travel through these crossings during the morning peak, with even longer boom gate down time in the future when more trains are running via the Metro Tunnel from 2025.

As well as causing congestion, there have been 36 near misses at these crossings since 2016.

We’ll build a new rail bridge to deliver the best outcome for the community. This design best suits the conditions of the area and will complement the existing rail bridge in Brunswick and Coburg.

A new bike and pedestrian path from Bell Street to Park Street will be delivered as part of the project, as well as creating around 4 MCGs worth of open space between Parkville and Coburg.

Removing these crossings will improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains, more often.
