Road closures and overnight works on Macartney Street
The Victorian Government is upgrading important rail infrastructure across the network, including the Hurstbridge and Mernda lines, to enable more train services, less crowding on peak trains and better public transport connections in Melbourne’s north east.
As part of these upgrades, a new substation is being built on Ruthven Station Reserve in Reservoir, to enable additional services on the Mernda Line. It will regulate the power source for the Mernda Line, allowing more trains to run more reliably. The substation has been prefabricated offsite and is now ready for delivery to Macartney Street.
Works taking place
The new substation will be delivered via semi-trailer to its final location on Macartney Street overnight on Saturday 19 November 2022. The oversized semi-trailer will leave site overnight on Sunday 20 November 2022.
In order to deliver the prefabricated substation building to site, Macartney Street is required to be free of vehicles throughout.
Delivery is scheduled overnight on the weekend to reduce impacts to road users as per traffic requirements for oversized vehicles.
What to expect
To facilitate the delivery of the substation, residents can expect:
- No parking available on Macartney Street between 6pm Friday 18 November and 6am Monday 21 November 2022
- Temporary road closures along Macartney Street overnight on Saturday 19 November and Sunday 20 November
- Minor tree trimming of overhanging council trees along Macartney Street on Tuesday 15 November
- Overnight noise and lights from heavy machinery
- An increase of workers on site throughout the weekend
The pedestrian and cycle path next to Ruthven Station Reserve on Macartney Street will be closed to pedestrians between White Street and Ruthven Station carpark until late 2022. This area is required for construction purposes.
During planned night works, construction noise is managed in accordance with Environment Protection Authority guidelines. Our Environment Team undertakes noise modelling ahead of any works outside of regular construction hours. Any impacted residences will be contacted and offered respite relocation for the duration of works.
Residents can expect work crews on the substation site until the end of 2022. Our regular construction hours are 7am – 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am – 1pm Saturday.
