Second leg for TBM Joan

Tunnelling has ramped up with the Metro Tunnel’s first tunnel boring machine, Joan, embarking on her second leg of the project – this time digging towards Parkville.

Joan and the second TBM, Meg, completed the first 1.2km stretch of tunnels from the Arden Station site to the western tunnel entrance in Kensington earlier this year.

After being disassembled and returned to Arden, Joan has been relaunched towards Parkville, with Meg expected to follow in around a month.

The launch of TBM Millie in April and Alice in May marks the beginning of digging of both tunnels between the future Anzac Station and the eastern entrance at South Yarra.

By mid-year all of the TBMs will be tunnelling around 20m deep under the city to create the tunnels for Victoria’s biggest ever public transport infrastructure project.
