We’re ready to start landscaping works near the bridge over Barongarook Creek in Colac.
We’ve worked closely with the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation and Colac Otway Shire to establish a commemorative space to recognise the Traditional Owners of the land, and as a memorial to the discovery of Aboriginal ancestral remains during our works.
Our landscaping plan is based on the use of indigenous and native plants to recognise the cultural significance of the area. We will be replacing three non-native Elm trees (which are in poor health) with River Red Gums.The trees thrive in creek and river environments and also provide nesting hollows for galahs, cockatoos, cockatiels and various parrots.
The commemorative space includes new seating and a reflection space around a feature stone and new pedestrian paths. Our landscaping work is the final stage of the Princes Highway West project, which involved duplicating 35km of highway from Winchelsea to Colac, including the new bridge over Barongarook Creek.
