The South Gippsland Highway has seen a significant step up in safety, with the first two stages of upgrades between Yarram and Meeniyan now complete and the third and final stage well underway. This stretch of the South Gippsland Highway is notoriously windy with a significant crash history.
We've worked closely with the local Eastern Region Maintenance Alliance crew to keep the delivery of these upgrades progressing through COVID-19 lockdowns. Working and collaborating with the local maintenance contractor has added many benefits to the project, including cost savings, reduced disruptions to the network and improved quality of works.
Together, we have constructed 24.5kms of shoulder widening, installed 3.75kms of safety barrier and completed an intersection upgrade. The upgrades have connected multiple townships with full shoulders, providing a safer experience for road users. A further 10.7km of shoulder widening and approximately 500m of safety barrier is currently being constructed as part of the third and final stage of the project.
