Major construction on the biggest investment in Melbourne’s roads ever, the Western Roads Upgrade, is now complete.

The $1.8 billion road project is reducing congestion and decreasing travel times for locals on

  • Dunnings and Palmers Road
  • Palmers Road
  • Derrimut Road
  • Leakes Road
  • Dohertys Road
  • Forsyth Interchange
  • Duncans Interchange.

The project has cut time spent on the road by an average of 20 per cent and supported more than 1,000 local jobs. The upgrade has also delivered benefits to tourists heading to Werribee Open Range Zoo, with new lanes saving up to 15 minutes between Werribee and Geelong, when previously journeys could take over an hour.

Our works also include strengthening seven structures and upgrading 57 intersections.

We've transformed the Federation Trail with three walking and cycling bridges over Leakes Road, Dohertys Road and Palmers Road/Sayers Road intersection. We've also built more than 50km of new walking and cycling paths along the upgraded roads.

These bridges and paths make will make walking and cycling journeys safer and more reliable and allow traffic to flow more freely along these roads.

We're also undertaking a 20-year maintenance contract guaranteeing the care of 260 kilometres of road from Footscray to Werribee.
