More level crossings have been fast-tracked for removal ahead of schedule, with boom gates to go in:

  • Surrey Hills
  • Mont Albert
  • Pakenham
  • Glen Huntly

The accelerated delivery program will see one level crossing removed every four weeks on average in 2021.

Surrey Hills and Mont Albert

The Union Road and Mont Albert Road boom gate removals will be complete by 2023, with a new rail trench separating the road and tracks.

Surrey Hills and Mont Albert stations will be consolidated into a single premium station in a central location. The new, modern station will sit in a central location less than 150 metres from the current Surrey Hills Station and less than 400 metres from the current Mont Albert Station – with entrances at both ends of the platforms.

Construction on the new station will start in mid-2021, with major works to begin in 2022.

Three sets of boom gates will be removed in 2023/2024 at:

  • McGregor Road
  • Main Street
  • Racecourse Road

A new Pakenham premium station will be built which will provide better connections between metropolitan and regional train services along with upgraded facilities and improved security.

A second station will also be built at Pakenham East and the metropolitan rail track will be extended by two kilometres.

Glen Huntly

The level crossings at Glen Huntly Road and Neerim Road will be removed in 2023, with the rail line lowered into a trench.
