Melbourne’s biggest ever infrastructure blitz has finished, with an enormous amount of work completed in just three weeks.

Hundred-strong crews worked around the clock to progress essential upgrades and complete maintenance.

During closures to the Cranbourne, Pakenham, Gippsland, Sandringham, Frankston and Glen Waverley lines, workers on the Metro Tunnel Project:

  • demolished the William Street Bridge in South Yarra
  • started constructing the roof slab for the eastern tunnel entrance
  • completed overhead wiring works.

While construction on the Metro Tunnel was underway, rail improvement works also took place along the Cranbourne, Pakenham, Frankston lines and the City Loop, as crews upgraded power and signalling systems. Level crossing removal works also progressed near Carrum.

Along the Mernda line in Melbourne’s north, Reservoir Station was demolished, and a temporary station constructed, with works also starting on the new rail bridge to remove the busy High Street level crossing.

On the Geelong and Warrnambool lines, essential maintenance and upgrade works were completed between Warrnambool and Melbourne to improve reliability of trains to the Victoria’s south-west, including progressing a new stabling yard for regional trains at Wyndham Vale.
