The Spring construction blitz is now complete, which saw works take place across the network to prepare for the Metro Tunnel.
Works began in Melbourne’s west in September, to allow bigger trains to run on the Sunbury Line and through the Metro Tunnel:
- upgrades to power and signalling
- extending existing platforms between Footscray and Sunshine
- building an additional platform and new rail track at West Footscray Station
- track works, earthworks and service installations to connect the train network to the future Metro Tunnel entrance.
The bigger trains, together with the Metro Tunnel, will enable an extra 113,000 peak hour passengers on the Sunbury Line each week and slash journey times by up to 20 minutes.
Construction also continued on the Metro Tunnel’s entrance in Kensington, while major excavation continues at the site of the new North Melbourne Station and Parkville Station.
Tram tracks were realigned along St Kilda Road in order to build the future ANZAC Station, which will improve access to Melbourne’s iconic landmarks such as the Shrine of Remembrance and the employment hub about St Kilda Road.
