To keep the rail network running smoothly and safely, essential power upgrades and maintenance works took place between Friday 30 August to Monday 2 September.

This shut, which affected nine metropolitan lines, strategically coincided with the AFL pre-finals bye weekend to minimise disruption to people across Melbourne.

The works were part of Victoria’s biggest power upgrade, helping to deliver bigger and better trains, and more modern signals and communications systems.

130 train replacement buses ran instead of trains on the Craigieburn, Cranbourne, Frankston, Pakenham, Sandringham, Sunbury, Upfield, Werribee and Williamstown lines, and regional Geelong, Gippsland and Warrnambool lines.

While the power was shut off, network power sources, overhead wiring, and signals were upgraded. As always, we thank the public for their patience while works took place.
