New connections in South Yarra, South Melbourne and the CBD will allow trams to spread out across the city, to where they're needed most in the future.

Tram infrastructure changes

Anzac Station will be integrated with the Domain Tram Interchange to provide seamless access between tram and train services. On completion, tram passengers will be able to access the interchange and Anzac Station from a new pedestrian underpass under St Kilda Road, making this busy area safer for pedestrians.

Building new tram infrastructure on Toorak Road West and St Kilda Road is an important first step in keeping Melburnians moving on trams during construction, delivered in stages to minimise the impacts on the local community, road and tram users.

Domain Interchange

During April 2018, the former Domain Interchange platform and associated infrastructure was demolished. To prepare for station box piling, removal of redundant stormwater drains, asphalt, and paving will be performed at the former interchange. A new temporary tram stop will replace the Domain Interchange during the construction of Anzac Station.

Park Street, South Melbourne (Stop 119)

Tram Stop 119 is now located on Park Street, South Melbourne to the west of Wells Street and Palmerston Crescent. The new stop replaces the stop previously located at the intersection of Kings Way and Park Street. The new stop will safely cater for the increasing number of passengers on the route 58 tram and provides improved access to the tram network during and following completion of our project.

Pedestrian access to the tram stop is available at the crossing points near Millers Lane and Wells Street/Palmerston Crescent. Permanent access changes and traffic light installation at the intersection of Park Street and Wells Street/Palmerston Crescent allow for safe vehicle turning movements and tram operations.

Bowen Crescent (Stop 21)

The Bowen Crescent tram stop has been removed. Passengers who would normally use Stop 21 will need to use either Stop 20 Domain Interchange, or Stop 22 Toorak Road West.

Route 58 on Toorak Road West

Trams now run along new tracks on Toorak Road West instead of Park Street (South Yarra) and Domain Road. Accessible tram stops have been built at Toorak Road West and Fawkner Park.

As the network planner, the Department of Transport will evaluate the new tram arrangements as part of its decision-making on whether trams return to Park Street and Domain Road following completion of the Metro Tunnel.
