Nepean Highway intersection

We’ve finished building an extra city-bound right-turn lane from South Road to improve access to Nepean Highway.

In late-November and December, we worked across two weekends to:

  • remove the existing traffic island and traffic light
  • install new drainage
  • build a new kerb and traffic island
  • install and connect the new traffic lights
  • lay asphalt and complete line marking.

Thanks for your patience while we continue to upgrade key intersections along South Road to reduce bottlenecks, improve traffic flow and make your journey safer and more reliable.

Taylor Street and Jasper Road

From Thursday 13 January, we’ll modify the Taylor Street and Jasper Road intersection to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety on South Road.

We’ll build a new centre median between Station Street and Jasper Road, move the pedestrian crossing from the west side of Taylor Street to the westside of Jasper Road, install new traffic lights, lay asphalt, and complete line marking.

South Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Station Street and Jasper Road between 7pm and 6am:

  • on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 and Sunday 16 January.

South Road closed overnight between Station Street and Jasper Road 8pm and 6am:

  • eastbound on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 January
  • westbound on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 January
  • both directions from Sunday 6 February for up to 5 nights

Lane closures will be in place on South Road between 7am and 4pm, and 7pm and 6am:

  • on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 January
  • from Thursday 27 January to Friday 4 February

Traffic management

Detours will be in place when roads are closed. Please drive safely, pay attention to on-road signs and follow our traffic controllers’ directions.

Changes to car parking

To minimise traffic disruptions, we’ll also need to temporarily remove the carparks between Jasper Road and Station Street on both sides of the road while we work. Alternative parking is available in Macs Lane, Station Street and Jasper Road.

During night works, we’ll need to temporarily reduce parking on the east side of Jasper Road between South Road and Fairbank Road and between Barry Street and Station street on the eastbound carriageway of South Road.

Please continue to support local traders while works are underway.

Pedestrian detours

We’ll also decommission the existing pedestrian crossing west of Taylor Street from Thursday January 13. You’ll need to use the pedestrian crossings at either Station Street or Jasper Road to safely cross South Road until the new crossing opens on Friday 11 February.

Changes to public transport

During the overnight closures, the eastbound bus stop at Jasper Road and South Road and the westbound bus stop at Taylor Street and South Road for services 811 and 812 will also be temporarily closed. Further information is available through ptv.vic.gov.au/disruptions/disruptions-information.

You can expect delays of up to 10 minutes when driving through the area. If you can, avoid the area during our works and find an alternative route. If you do need to travel through the area, please allow extra time for your journey.

Our progress may be affected by weather and other unexpected events. You can also sign up for email and SMS alerts.

Managing construction and traffic impacts

While we work, you may experience some construction noise and light from our temporary lighting towers. We’ll do our best to keep this to a minimum by:

  • Scheduling the noisiest works earlier in the night
  • Using noise-reducing equipment around our machinery
  • Regularly monitoring noise levels
  • Directing light away from homes.

You can also expect some changes to the road network. We’ll do our best to minimise disruptions to your journey and keep you and our workers safe.
