Construction is underway to upgrade the Ouyen to Murrayville Line as part of the Murray Basin Rail Project. Thanks for your patience while this important work is underway.

What we are doing

A site compound and laydown area has been established next to the rail corridor on Rowe Street in Ouyen.

The pedestrian overpass near the Ouyen compound will remain open at all times, with traffic management in place to assist with safe pedestrian movements through the area.

Site compounds have also been established in Underbool and Murrayville.

Works will include:

  • replacing damaged sleepers
  • adding ballast and adjusting track
  • reinstating level surfaces and road approaches.

These works will take place between 7am and 7pm, on a 10 days on, 4 days off cycle.

What to be aware of

There will be an increase in truck movements in the area while we transport materials and equipment to and from site. There may also be some additional noise and dust in the area during construction of the compound.

Temporary construction and material laydown areas will be established along the rail line to support the works. There will be machinery, vehicles and workers in the area and in the rail corridor.

Mallee Highway closure

From Friday 15 October to Tuesday 19 October, the Mallee Highway will be closed between McIntyre and Ouyen-Patchewollock roads in Ouyen to allow construction to take place.

Detours for vehicles will be in place via the Calder and Sunraysia highways and Hopetoun-Walpeup Road. There will also be a detour available to local traffic via Ouyen-Patchewollock Road.

Road users should allow extra travel time and follow traffic management signage. View the map below for further details.

How we are minimising impacts

Dust

We use a range of measures to minimise dust from construction activities, including placing dust monitors in and around the construction site, staging works to minimise exposed areas and using water carts to wet down work areas.

Noise

We monitor noise levels to ensure they are within the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) noise control guidelines and limit out-of-hours works as much as possible.

Vehicle movement

Traffic management and signage will be in place to assist road users on impacted roads.

Health and safety

Works on Murray Basin Rail Project are continuing safely with strict COVIDSafe plans in place and we’ll continue to comply with all directions from the Chief Health Officer including vaccination requirements.

To help reduce the spread of COVID-19, we are managing the number of staff attending our worksites and limiting those on site to workers who are regionally based or who have been based in regional Victoria since before the construction shutdown commenced.

The two week construction shutdown only applies to projects in metropolitan Melbourne and locked down areas in regional Victoria.

We are also implementing preventative measures on site to ensure community safety including temperature screening, additional protective equipment including masks, daily health screening of workers, enhanced cleaning, staggered shifts and break times, open air meal areas and physical distancing.
