What does the smart and connected city of 2050 look like?

Are you a student in Years 4–10* at a school in the Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong or Gippsland regions? Do you have an idea about the smart and connected city of 2050?

Share it with us and you’ll have the chance to win great prizes for your school, and learn about careers in STEAM and design.

* Restricted to students in Years 5–10 in Bendigo and Ballarat, Years 4–6 in Gippsland and Years 7–10 in the Geelong regions.

What is the challenge?

Following the success of our first Design Challenge with Bendigo Tech School in 2020, Regional Rail Revival has expanded the Design Challenge and partnered with tech schools across Victoria to expand the program in 2021.

Schools in Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and Gippsland will take part in the Design Challenge 2050 this year.

You’ll get inspired at our Starter Day before heading back to school to start work on your team’s design. A series of guided learning tours and mentoring workshops will help your team to develop and perfect its idea before sending it to the judges.

If your idea is shortlisted, you’ll get to present it to our panel of engineers and other experts from Rail Projects Victoria at our Gala Pitch Final. There are great prizes up for grabs for the winning teams and schools!

What kind of ideas are we looking for?

We want to hear your ideas about the future of public transport, in response to the question: What does the smart and connected city of 2050 look like?

Your idea should respond to one or more of the competition’s themes:

  • Technology or app-driven transport solution e.g. helping passengers to plan their onward journey
  • Communications campaign e.g. promoting safety by design
  • Product prototype e.g. a revolutionary train seat
  • Building and system design e.g. the railway station of the future.

Join the challenge!

If your teacher has asked you to check out this page, they’ve probably already registered your school for the challenge, so ask them how to get involved with your school’s team!

If you’ve found this page yourself, ask your class or science teacher to check our teacher info to find out if your school is eligible to register a team.
