Passengers on the North East Line will enjoy more reliable and comfortable journeys sooner thanks to a massive program of works undertaken along the line while coaches replaced trains due to the Victoria and NSW border closure.

Passenger trains will return to the North East Line on 1 December to allow ARTC to progress its program of track upgrades, including mudhole removal and ballast works.

This work is designed to improve the track surface helping V/Line deliver a safer, more reliable and comfortable journey for passengers when services resume.

Major construction on the North East Line Upgrade started earlier this year, with more than 300 kilometres of tamping and mud hole removal works and of drainage reinstatement now finished.

More than 80 level crossings have been renewed, more than 80 rail bridges have been upgraded to give passengers a smoother ride.

ARTC is also delivering additional works on top of the original project scope, including upgrades to 20 more rail bridges and renewing track turnouts at Violet Town and Seymour.

The Victorian Government is also investing more funds to prepare the North East Line for VLocity trains, which will be delivered on completion of the project.

An additional $10 million in joint Australian and Victorian Government funding will deliver critical upgrades to stabling at Albury Station to enable it to house VLocity trains overnight, bringing the total investment in the project to $285 million.

Work has also commenced on modifications to six public level crossings on the line – two have been recently closed boosting safety for passengers and motorists, while others will be either closed or upgraded to feature boom gates, lights and bells.

Further stabling modifications will also be made to the South Dynon railway precinct in Melbourne to allow the new standard gauge VLocity trains to be stored, fuelled and maintained.
