South Eastern Program Alliance and Djurwa
Djurwa, an Indigenous-owned joint venture between Yalagan Group and BINGO Industries, offers comprehensive waste management and recycling services to the construction industry. Since its inception in 2021, Djurwa has rapidly expanded its fleet to six trucks and numerous bins, primarily through collaborations with LXRP and other significant infrastructure projects in Melbourne.
Their breakthrough came with the South Eastern Program Alliance (SEPA) awarding Djurwa its first major contract for recycling and waste management services on the Union Road and Mont Albert Road level crossing removal project. Sean Wilson, Djurwa director, credits LXRP Union Mont Albert for catapulting their growth and praises LXRP’s social procurement and Aboriginal engagement framework for opening doors to further contracts and expanding their capacity.
SEPA played a pivotal role in Djurwa's development, offering mentoring, support, and guidance on business systems and processes, especially in reporting and invoicing. Monthly meetings between SEPA project teams and Djurwa facilitated feedback and continuous improvement, enabling Djurwa to tender for additional work on subsequent SEPA projects.
SEPA actively promoted Djurwa's involvement in other Laing O’Rourke projects and engaged in storytelling through various communication channels and events like Supplier Diversity Week and NAIDOC Week. Additionally, SEPA provided referrals to new stakeholders, further enhancing Djurwa's capabilities.
With four Indigenous employees and aiding BINGO in employing an additional 27 First Nations employees, Djurwa's commitment to Indigenous employment and capacity-building remains steadfast, contributing positively to the community and the construction industry.
