We’re upgrading Ballarat Station to improve accessibility, safety, and connectivity for all public transport users, while considering the heritage of the station.

The project will be completed in 2026 and includes an accessible pedestrian overpass, with a lift and stairs to each platform, and an upgrade to the northern station entrance.

V/Line is carrying out infrastructure maintenance works on the Ballarat Line while trains aren’t running from first service Tuesday 18 November until last service Friday 28 November.

During this time, between 7pm on Friday 21 November 2025 and 6am on Monday 24 November 2025, we’ll lift the new pedestrian overpass and 2 lift shafts into their permanent positions as well as carry out other essential works. We’ll make every effort to complete our works during these times, however timing is subject to change.

Ballarat Station, including buildings and platforms, will be closed to the public during this time. Temporary waiting areas and accessible portable toilets will be provided for passengers using the rail replacement coaches or other station services.

What we’re doing

From 7pm on Friday 21 November 2025 to 6am on Monday 24 November 2025, while trains aren’t running, we’ll:

• use a 750-tonne crane to lift and install the pedestrian overpass and lift shafts into their permanent positions
• pour the concrete floor in the overpass once it has been installed
• carry out essential electrical works in and around the station
• carry out minor finishing works on the northern station entrance handrails
• install safety railing on both platforms around the base of the existing pedestrian overpass, in accordance with Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport. This railing will support people with low vision by indicating the close proximity of the low hanging staircase structure.

What to expect

While we work in Ballarat Station you may experience:

• moderate noise levels
• minimal vibration
• construction vehicles in our project site areas and surrounding roads
• temporary lighting in the station precinct.

When we’ll work

• We’ll work around the clock from 7pm on Friday 21 November 2025 until 6am on Monday 24 November 2025.
• From Saturday 1 November until Saturday 29 November inclusive, we’ll work on Saturdays from 7am until 5pm.
• At other times, we’ll work Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm and Saturdays as required 7am to 1pm.

Changes to the way you travel

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule however the following timing is subject to change.

Coaches replace trains

• Coaches replace trains between Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat, Ararat, Maryborough from the first service on Tuesday 18 November until last service Friday 28 November 2025.
  • V/Line will be conducting maintenance works during this time. Visit the V/Line website for more information.

Parking

• Temporary closure of parking on Railway Parade (south side) from 7am Wednesday 19 November until 5pm Wednesday 26 November 2025.
  • Seven 30-minute parking spaces along Railway Parade, closest to Platform 2, will be temporarily closed to facilitate the temporary relocation of the taxi pick up and drop off bay. Please follow signage and directions from project staff during this time.
• Temporary relocation of taxi pick up/drop off from 7am Wednesday 19 November until 5pm Wednesday 26 November 2025.
  • A site office caravan and accessible public toilets will be temporarily placed in the southern taxi bay area.
  • Taxis will drop off and pick up passengers from a temporary bay along Railway Parade, closest to Platform 2. Please follow pedestrian detour signage at the station to access the temporary taxi bay.

Pedestrian detour

• At the rail line via the level crossing on Lydiard Street from 7pm Friday 21 November 2025 until 6am Monday 24 November 2025. Please follow signage and directions of project staff during this time.
• A section of Platform 1 near the coach bays will be closed to complete preparation works for night works from 7am Wednesday 19 November until 7pm Friday 21 November 2025. Please follow the pedestrian detour thought the ticket office and southern waiting room.

Station access changes

• Ballarat Station closed from 7pm Friday 21 November 2025 until 6am Monday 24 November 2025.
  • The public toilets, waiting rooms, V/Line ticket office, Station Refreshment Room café and Sweaty AF gym will be closed during this time. All entrances to the platforms and station buildings on the north and south sides will also be closed.
  • Accessible portable toilets will be available on the southern side of the station and additional seating will be available in the coach arrival and departure area.
• Northern station entrance intermittent closures from 7am Monday 17 November until 5pm Wednesday 19 November 2025.
  • Please access Platform 2 via the alternative entrance during closures, near Lydiard Street North. Access to Sweaty AF Gym will not change during these works.
  • Signage will be in place to assist passengers through the pedestrian detour. See the pedestrian detour map below.
