We're opening West Tarneit Station on Sunday 13 September. Passenger services at the new station will begin with the first train that day.

With 4-bay bus interchange, parking for up to 400 commuters and an accessible pedestrian underpass, the new station better connects the growing suburbs of the west to Melbourne’s CBD.

The station features ramp and stair access to the platforms, a landscaped precinct with seating, separated walking and cycling paths, 10 accessible parking spaces, bike hoops and secure bike storage.

The 182 bus route between Tarneit Station and Werribee will service West Tarneit Station. A new bus route, the 186, will travel between Tarneit Station and West Tarneit Station, via Dohertys Road.

The new West Tarneit Station will be served by 689 trains each week on the Geelong Line, making it easier for more people to catch the train.

West Tarneit Station features

Parking

The commuter car park has 400 car spaces, including ten accessible car spaces located at the closest point to the path leading to the underpass for northern platform access and the ramp for southern platform access.

Pick up/drop off zone

There are five spaces in the pick up/drop off zone located at the closest point to the southern entrance.

Bike storage

Cyclists can secure their bikes using the hoops located north of the rail line. On the south side there are bike hoops as well as a Parkiteer (locked bike storage facility) that can hold up to 26 bikes, located between the bus interchange and the pedestrian underpass.

Community safety

A well-lit, accessible pedestrian underpass allows passengers to cross under the rail line easily.

The underpass and precinct pathways have good, open sight lines.

There is CCTV and lighting throughout the station precinct.

Marked pedestrian zones in the car park are designated areas reserved for pedestrians moving in key north-south, east-west directions through the car park.

This supports the safe movement of all car park users.

Protective Services Officers (PSOs)

There is a PSOs’ facility located on the south side of the new station. PSOs will be on site from approximately 5.30pm until the last train, seven days a week.

Future development

The new station platforms are long enough to accommodate 9-car VLocity trains. The precinct design allows for a future car park and bus interchange on the north side of the rail line and future walking and cycling connections to meet increased demand as the area continues to grow with future development.

Travelling to West Tarneit Station

South of the rail line

Buses, cars, pedestrians and cyclists can access the station via Leakes Road. A new intersection on Leakes Road, at Heartlands Boulevard, has traffic lights and pedestrian crossings to provide a safe connection to the new station access road called Mainstay Boulevard.

Pedestrians can also enter the station precinct via Modern Crescent.

North of the rail line

Pedestrians and cyclists enter the new West Tarneit Station from Ceremony Drive. There is no vehicle access to the station from the north. Drivers can take Davis Road or Tarneit Road to access Leakes Road, and then Mainstay Boulevard.

Better public transport for Melbourne’s west

Trains servicing West Tarneit Station

The Victorian Government recently announced a new timetable with different trains to Geelong and Wyndham Vale during peak times, providing more seats and bigger trains for regional passengers.

There will be:

• 689 weekly services stopping at West Tarneit Station.
• 10 dedicated peak services to Wyndham Vale each week.
• 50% more capacity in the peaks with bigger VLocity trains to Wyndham Vale.

Buses servicing West Tarneit Station

The new West Tarneit Station has a 4-bay bus interchange located on the southwestern side of the rail line.

A new Route 186 will run between Tarneit Station and West Tarneit Station via Dohertys Road. Route 186 buses will run seven days a week, adding 770 weekly trips to the bus network.

The existing Route 182 bus service between Tarneit Station and Werribee will run more often and travel via West Tarneit Station, giving passengers more options between Tarneit, West Tarneit and Werribee, with an extra 362 trips each week.

Both routes will run up to every 15 minutes during weekday peak times, every 20 minutes across most of the day and every 40 minutes later at night. On weekends, both routes will run every 20 minutes during the day and every 40 minutes later at night.

These changes support Victoria’s Bus Plan to make the bus network simpler, more reliable and better connected.

Why do train drivers use the horn?

Residents near the new West Tarneit Station may hear train horns once the station opens.

Safety standards require drivers to sound the horn:

• before departure from a station
• when approaching a station if another train is approaching, stopped or leaving that station
• when trains pass each other at or close to level crossings
• passing a whistle post (a fixed board alerting the driver to use the horn), these are located before all level crossings
• when authorised workers are working on or near tracks
• if the driver sees someone near the train tracks
• when entering or passing through a tunnel or deep cutting

Train drivers may also sound the horn if the train is passing through a station without stopping or at their discretion for safety reasons.
