Upcoming works in January 2023

We’re working to remove the 2 dangerous and congested level crossings at Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert and Union Road, Surrey Hills and by mid 2023 the boom gates will be gone for good and the new Union Station open.

Drivers

Mont Albert Road will be closed at the level crossing from 7pm Friday 13 January to 6am Monday 23 January. Please take care when driving in construction zones and follow the detour signs and any instructions from traffic control staff.

Train passengers

Trains travelling towards Lilydale and Belgrave will not stop at Surrey Hills Station from Monday 30 January. A shuttle bus will be in operation between Chatham, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert stations.

February to May

From Friday 17 February until late May construction crews will work day and night, 7 days a week as part of our final construction blitz to dig the 1.3km long rail trench and remove the level crossings at Union Road and Mont Albert Road.

To complete our works, we’ll need to close sections of the Belgrave and Lilydale lines and Union and Mont Albert roads during the construction blitz. Access to Mont Albert Village and Union Road traders will be maintained at all times.

We’ll reopen the 2 main roads in early May and by the end of May, trains will be running in the trench and stopping at the brand-new Union Station.

Drivers

Union Road and Mont Albert Road will be closed at the level crossings from Friday 17 February to early May.

If you usually drive through Mont Albert or Surrey Hills, you will detour via Elgar, Whitehorse, Balwyn and Canterbury roads.

If you’re travelling to the area, Union Road and Mont Albert Road will remain open either side of the level crossings and access to the local shops will be maintained.

Please take care when driving in construction zones and follow the detour signs and any instructions from traffic control staff.

Train passengers

Buses will replace trains between Camberwell and Box Hill, and at times between Camberwell and Ringwood from 8.30pm Friday 17 February to late May 2023.Rail replacement bus stops will be located close to each station.

For Surrey Hills passengers, the rail replacement bus stop will be located on Canterbury Road in Surrey Hills and will connect with local shuttle services and train replacement bus services between Camberwell and Box Hill stations.

For Mont Albert passengers, the rail replacement bus stops will be located on Mont Albert Road, near Hamilton Street.

Pedestrians

Pedestrian access across the tracks at Union Road and Mont Albert Road will be closed most of the time.

Pedestrians will be able to cross the rail corridor at Robinson Road in Surrey Hills and Creswick Lane at Mont Albert, which will both be closed to vehicles.

A local shuttle bus will help you get around the local area and access the shops.

The bus stops will be clearly marked and located at Union Road and Mont Albert Road, close to the level crossings.

We’ll also set up temporary pedestrian crossings near Mont Albert and Union Roads when we can do so safely.

Bus passengers (routes 612 and 766)

Bus stops close to the work areas will be closed.Passengers for the Route 612 bus will be able to catch the bus from the corner of Mont Albert Road and Union Road and from the corner of Canterbury Road and Union Road.

Passengers for the Route 766 bus will be able to catch the bus near the corner of Mont Albert Road and Hamilton Street and from the corner of Union Road and Canterbury Road.
