19 December 2023

We’ve removed the dangerous and congested level crossings at Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert, and opened the brand-new Union Station.

Thanks for your patience while our crews worked around the clock to build the rail trench and the new station. To support the completion of remaining project works, we’ll work overnight along the rail corridor from 8:30pm, Sunday 14 January to 3:30am, Monday 15 January while trains are not running.

During this time, we will undertake:

  • Backfilling works
  • Installation of screens
  • Overhead structure repair works.

What to expect:

  • Construction vehicles will access the rail corridor via Beatty Street and Churchill Street.
  • Our crews will be working behind Beatty Street Park to complete backfilling works.
  • Three screens will be installed on the Union Station platforms.
  • We’ll complete repair works on an overhead structure located between the Union Road deck and the Union Station western concourse.
  • During night works, targeted lighting will be used for work areas with measures in place to prevent light spill.
  • Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the works.
  • Works are expected to generate low levels of construction related noise.

Changes to the way you travel:

Buses will replace trains on sections of the Belgrave, Lilydale and Alamein lines from 8pm to last service Sunday 14 January, between Burnley and Ringwood; and Camberwell and Alamein stations. Trains will operate as normal from first service, Monday 15 January.
