Removing 50 of Melbourne’s dangerous and congested level crossings will transform the way people live, work and travel across metropolitan Melbourne and improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. At Bayswater, the project team is removing the level crossings by lowering the train line below Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road, rebuilding Bayswater Station, constructing a new cycling/pedestrian path and reconstructing the station car park.

What's happening?

Site establishment

In February and March, the finishing touches were added to the construction site office, ready for the project team to begin work at Bayswater. We've installed over 50 temporary buildings to accommodate our construction team which includes engineers, designers, construction and administration staff.

Upcoming Works

Walking/cycling path relocation

In late April, the team will begin to move the buried pipe that holds all of the signalling, communication and electrical cables essential for running trains. As a result of this work, the Ringwood to Belgrave Rail Trail (walking/cycling path) will be relocated between Dandenong Creek and Scoresby Road. Detours will be in place. We encourage cyclists and pedestrians to check signs along the route for more information.

Parking at Bayswater Station

From Monday 2 May, an additional 40 car spaces will be closed in the station car park as we begin work on relocating essential signalling, communication and electrical cables close to the rail line.

From Monday 2 May, alternative parking will be available at Bayswater Oval (Monday to Friday only), on the corner of Mountain Highway and Bayswater Road, just an eight minute walk from the station. Three disability permit parking spaces will remain at the station throughout construction.

From this date, we will be trialling the use of a free shuttle bus service to help customers get from the oval to the station. The shuttle will use an existing bus stop on Mountain Highway, in front of the Knox Community Arts Centre, and travel to the station. This service will run from Monday 2 May,  between 6am to 9am and 4pm to 7pm Monday to Friday only approximately every six minutes.

From Saturday 21 May, the Bayswater Station car park will be closed to allow construction of the new station and bus interchange to start. On completion of the project, Bayswater Station car park will be fully restored with approximately 390 car spaces.

Bayswater locals take a virtual tour of their new station

Bayswater locals took a virtual tour around their new station at community drop-in sessions held in early March.

Using state-of-the-art virtual reality equipment, our engineers showed locals some of the key features of the Bayswater Level Crossing Removal Project, including the new station  building, the bridges at Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road as well as the new walking/cycling path.

Check out a video of the virtual tool in action on our YouTube channel (Level Crossing Removal Project).

If you'd like to experience a virtual tour of the new station, call us on 1800 105 105 to make an appointment, or come along to our next community drop-in session.
