Community open space

We are removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Buckley Street, Essendon. We’ll be doing this by building a road underpass beneath the railway line, which means better traffic flow and ensures the safety of the local community.

The removal of the Buckley Street level crossing provides a range of opportunities to reinvigorate the surrounding area. There will be new community space that we can use to create safer transport connections and more landscaping.

From the southern side of Buckley Street through to the northern side of Essendon Railway Station, we’re tightening the community’s connection with a landscaped area along the rail corridor.

We’re enhancing the character of the heritage precinct while making sure people get where they need to go safely.

Rose Street

Rose Street village is bursting with character and we want to celebrate it.

The traffic along Rose Street will be slowed down, or ‘calmed’, to promote cycling and walking. It will be a place to get you where you need to go, or it will be your destination for sipping, shopping and socialising.

Parking for the retail village will be available, along with on-street bicycle parking near the station which will allow more locals to enjoy the rejuvenated area.

We want to restore views of the heritage station and it’s landscaped setting – the defining character of Rose Street village.

Russell Street

We will be making it easier to access public transport, increasing open spaces and improving connections to the train station.

New open areas will allow space for community activities.

Buckley Street

The road underpass will mean no more queues at the boom gates for the 11,000 drivers that travel along Buckley Street each day, which causes congestion and frustration.

The new community space above the Buckley Street road underpass will allow for safer and more direct pathways for the community to get where they need to go.

We’ve been looking at ways to ensure the existing character of the area is maintained when building the road underpass. In fact, some of the road underpass design concepts are inspired by Essendon’s homes and gardens which are unique to the area.
