How we are removing the congested level crossing

We are removing the Buckley Street level crossing in Essendon by building a road underpass beneath the railway line.

This will mean no more queues at the boom gates for the 11,000 drivers that travel along Buckley Street each weekday. It will also mean we can create new community spaces for all to enjoy.

Our expert project team are getting on with the job of separating the rail line and the road, which allows for better traffic flow and a safer local community.

What will be the benefits of the new Buckley Street underpass?

Puts safety first

Removing the level crossing creates a safer environment by separating pedestrians and school students from traffic and the railway line.

Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists will no longer be stuck at the boom gates.

Preserves the heritage listed station

The Federation Free style Essendon Railway Station will be preserved for future generations.

The station is a socially and historically important link to Essendon’s shared past which we are protecting.

Improves traffic flow and travel times

The boom gates are currently down for 78 minutes during the weekday morning peak, causing congestion and frustration for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

When removed, the traffic will be able to flow more freely, allowing you to get where you’re going sooner.

No private property acquisition

No compulsory property buy-outs of homes or businesses will be necessary.

Minimise disruption

The road underpass is the least disruptive way of removing the level crossing, meaning less lengthy closures of the Craigieburn Line and road disruptions.

The boom gates are expected to be removed by late 2018.

Creates better connections

New and improved walking and cycling paths will be created to access the station, schools and shops.

We’re making sure the community remains connected.

Creates more open space

New open spaces will allow for better, safer connects and creates a vibrant area around Essendon station for the community.
