Major works are underway to remove level crossings at Grange, Koornang, Murrumbeena and Poath Roads and rebuild stations at Carnegie, Murrumbeena and Hughesdale.

Peak construction underway

The project has hit peak construction, with significant progress made over the last month. In an Australian engineering first, a 60m wheeled straddle carrier has come into action at Murrumbeena, installing pieces of elevated rail. The super-sized machinery, longer than an Olympic swimming pool, is critical to removing dangerous and congested level crossings in an area too narrow for regular cranes.

Getting on with the job

Over coming months, the carrier will continue shifting and installing spans to extend the new rail out towards Carnegie and then to Hughesdale in the other direction. The existing station at Hughesdale will be removed to make way for a new station to the west of Poath Road.

We encourage you to continue to shop local and support your local traders during the station closure. Over the coming month works on Murrumbeena and Carnegie stations will continue with platform, canopy and concourse works to be undertaken.

Open space consultation reports released

The Caulfield to Dandenong project undertook an extensive consultation program, allowing everyone the opportunity to have a say on what the 22.5 hectares of new open space should look like.

In August the project released a report that outlines the recommendations from the Community Open Space Expert Panel. We also published a report that  outlines the key feedback, ideas and recommendations received from the community. The reports are available on our website. The final open space detailed design will be released in late 2017.

Hughesdale Station design

The project will be soon releasing the design for Hughesdale Station. Join us at our information session to see the final design, and speak with designers and engineers who are working on the project.

Murrumbeena to Malvern flood mitigation project

The project includes a section of elevated rail between Murrumbeena Road and Poath Road which intersects with Melbourne Water’s Murrumbeena to Malvern Flood Mitigation Project.

This project will see Melbourne Water construct a new stormwater drain to minimise the impact of flooding to properties in Murrumbeena and Malvern East.

Melbourne Water and LXRP have been working together to find a design solution for the area where Riley Reserve in Murrumbeena meets the current railway embankment. A meet the experts session was held in August to discuss the design.

Rail disruptions

We’re working hard to ensure minimum inconvenience to residents, commuters, local businesses and shoppers wherever possible. However, there will be some disruptions including the following:

• Murrumbeena Station is currently closed and will re-open on 2 October 2017. Due to the complexity of the straddle carrier and wet and windy weather conditions, the closure was required to be extended. Train replacement buses are operating.
• Buses will replace trains on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines between Caulfield and Dandenong stations from 12.30am Saturday 28 October until the last service on Sunday 29 October 2017.
• Carnegie Station will be closed between 14 October and 20 November 2017. Train replacement buses will operate.
• Hughesdale Station will be closed between 14 October and will re-open in 2018, when the Poath Road level crossing has been removed and a new station built. Train replacement buses will operate.
