We’re closing Webster Street at the level crossing and building a new road under the rail line, connecting Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads.

What we’re doing

To prepare for construction of the new road underpass, we’ll relocate a gas line under the ground between Thomas Street and Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street from Monday 16 June to early August. We’ll need to excavate the ground and cut into road surfaces to relocate the gas line, then asphalt and reinstate the roads.

During this time, we’ll need to close some roads and lanes in the area. We’ll do these works at nighttime to minimise disruption to the community.

What to expect

• Works taking place intermittently at night between Thomas Street and Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street, including on Lonsdale Street-Service Road.
• Increase in noise, vibration, lighting and dust. Water carts and sweepers will be onsite to mitigate dust.
• Construction workers and vehicles in the area.
• Traffic management in place to assist drivers, pedestrians and bike riders.

Businesses close to the works will be kept up to date as works progress.

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule; however dates and times are subject to change.

Changes to the way you travel

At times from 9pm to 6am, Monday 16 June to early August:

• Intermittent lane closures on Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street
• Intermittent closure of Lonsdale Street-Service Road to vehicles, including on street parking
• Access to businesses will be maintained at all times
• On street parking will be available on Thomas Street and Lonsdale Street north of Foster Street
