14 July 2025
To prepare for more trains, more often once the Metro Tunnel opens later this year, we’re closing Webster Street at the level crossing and building a new road under the rail line. The new underpass will connect Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads.
What we’re doing
To make way for the new road underpass, we're building a new Lonsdale Street-Service Road entry and exit from Tuesday 22 July to mid August.
To complete these works, we’ll excavate the ground and cut into road surfaces to construct new kerb, then asphalt the road.
What to expect
- Night works from 9pm to 6am.
- Road, lane and pedestrian pathway closures.
- Temporary and permanent closures of on-street parking.
- Traffic management in place to assist drivers, pedestrians and bike riders.
- Increased noise, vibration, lighting and dust. Water carts and sweepers will be onsite to mitigate dust.
- Increased construction workers and vehicles in the area.
Access to businesses will be maintained at all times.
We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule; however, dates and times are subject to change.
Changes to the way you travel
To allow crews to safely complete works in the rail corridor, buses will replace trains on sections of the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines in July and August.
