We're removing the Camms Road level crossing by building a new road bridge over the rail line.

This is one of the last level crossings to go on the busy Cranbourne Line. Building a new road bridge will free up traffic for the 12,000 vehicles that pass through the crossing each day.

The level crossing will be gone for good by 2024 – 1 year ahead of schedule. The Victorian Government is also delivering 400 new and upgraded car parking spaces at Cranbourne Station as part of the Car Parks for Commuters program and the Growth Area's Incentive Contribution. The new car park will feature improved CCTV and lighting as well as more bike parking facilities.

As with any major construction project, some noise, vibration, dust, and temporary changes to traffic are unavoidable. This factsheet explains how we manage a range of construction impacts and how we carefully consider the community.

Temporary changes to traffic

We work hard to minimise any disruption to the community, however some temporary disruption is needed so we can safely complete works.

During construction there may be times where we need to reduce speed limits, close lanes on roads and create temporary detours.

For the most part we will be able to keep one lane open along Camms Road in each direction, with reduced speed limits in place.

We will work to minimise impacts on the community by scheduling road works outside of peak hours where possible.

You'll see traffic controllers around the area to help manage changes to local roads.

We’ll provide regular updates ahead of time about any changes in the area with:

• letterbox drops and door knocks
• social media posts
• on site information boards and station posters
• 24-hour information line during construction on 1800 105 105.

This means that residents, businesses, commuters and visitors are aware of any traffic changes and rail disruptions in the area and can plan their journey.

Temporary walking and cycling changes

There will be times when pedestrian and cyclist connections will be disrupted by works.

We’ll ensure these disruptions are minimised and will provide temporary solutions, such as detours where possible.

When pedestrian and cycling connections are disrupted, traffic management and signed detours will be in place to help guide you through the area safely and help you get to where you’re going. Access will be reinstated following completion of the works.

Temporary rail disruptions

We'll keep closures to the Cranbourne Line to a minimum during construction.

Building a road bridge over the rail minimises closures of the Cranbourne Line and disruptions to local residents and businesses. Other designs would have taken up to a year longer to construct.

Closing the Cranbourne Line for short periods will be unavoidable to ensure that major works can be carried out safely.

When closures are necessary, we will provide train replacement buses so that you can always get to your destination.

Where possible we will also schedule works during off-peak periods such as school holidays, public holidays and weekends.

How we reduce noise and vibration

To keep construction and noise to a minimum, we:

• work within approved construction times, Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturdays between 7am and 1pm whenever possible
• keep our machines in good working order
• monitor noise and vibration levels to make sure they are within guidelines.

Measures will be put in place to minimise impacts to the local community, including scheduling noisy works to occur during the day where possible. Some works will occur at night for safety reasons and to minimise disruptions to roads and the train network. If out of hours works are required, we'll work with nearby local residents to inform them of the works and depending on the type of works, discuss options that may be available to help reduce the impact.

Construction works will be undertaken using methods that minimise disturbance to the community and avoid damage to buildings and structures.

How we manage dust

We use a range of measures to minimise the amount of dust generated and to keep the air clean, including:

• staging works to minimise the areas exposed to wind
• covering truck loads and stockpiles
• spraying exposed areas with water, especially on hot and windy days
• reducing the speed of construction vehicles
• monitoring air quality to ensure all construction activities comply with Victorian guidelines.
