Community inclusion

Across the Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach level crossing removal projects, we have invested over $1.25 million so far in organisations that provide employment and training to disadvantaged groups in their communities. For example - Nadrasca and Monero.

Ecology

We have built and installed 30 nest boxes and artificial hollows around trees in Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach in Kingston City Council land.

This is a great environmental initiative to promote native wildlife to return to the area after being disturbed or displaced by construction activities and to substitute natural hollow in trees that have been removed due to clearing activities.

These nest boxes and hollows are designed for lorikeets, rosellas, micro-bats, and brushtail and ringtail possums known to the area who may use them.

Landscaping

Tea tree trunks were salvaged from station precincts in Bonbeach and Chelsea during the December works and are currently in storage with the plan to reuse them for hard landscaping when the stations reopen.

Trees and vegetation

As part of a major landscaping program across the new stations at Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach, more than 820 trees and 85,000 shrubs, groundcovers and grasses will be planted along the rail corridor and new station precincts to provide bold foliage textures, enhance local biodiversity and invigorate the area.

Groundcovers are plants, shrubs or grasses that grow over the surface of the ground and can help to prevent soil erosion and weeds.

We focused on providing a resilient, sustainable landscape by selecting drought-tolerant plants with low water usage and high growth performance.

Renewable energy

Two Solar Sheds located at Edithvale and Bonbeach have been used to power lighting, heating and cooling for workforce facilities.

Solar panels have been installed at the new stations for Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach.

Erosion and sediment control

At Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach, we’ll use an innovative Filter Mat system that is used to cover all drains and captures sediment.

This results in the minimisation of sediment moving into drains, as part of various environmental measures used on the project, such as ERSED (Erosion and Sediments Controls).

The Filter Mats are durable and are reused at other projects.
