30 April 2025
We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale by building new rail bridges. We’re also closing the Bear Street level crossing in Mordialloc and building a new Mordialloc Station in 2026.
To keep traffic moving smoothly and safely through the boom gate-free areas, we need to make changes to nearby roads.
Safety is a priority for the project. To ensure traffic changes are safe for all road and path users, space for some street parking needs to be reduced nearby.
The rail bridge design minimises overall impacts to street parking, however these parking reductions ensure road changes meet safety requirements.
Aspendale road changes
- A new link road under the rail bridge in Aspendale, providing access to the Nepean Highway.
- A roundabout on Station Street to keep traffic flowing onto the new link road.
- A signalised intersection at the link road and Nepean Highway, including lights at Hearle Avenue.
- Two pedestrian crossings on Station Street for safe access across the road.
Mordialloc road changes
- A slip lane for vehicles turning left from McDonald Street onto Main Street/Nepean Highway.
- A new entry into Main Street Service Road from Main Street/Nepean Highway.
- New signalised pedestrian crossings on McDonald Street and Albert Street.
- Making Albert Street one-way southbound between Lewis and McDonald streets to accommodate the rail bridge.
Road standards
Changes to street parking are necessary to ensure the new road designs meet Austroads guidelines, Department of Transport and Planning standards, the Road Management Act 2004 and stakeholder requirements.
These mandated requirements include minimum lane and road width, safe sight lines, adequate stopping distances and appropriate turning movements.
Parking changes near you
To meet road safety standards and guidelines, we need to make the following changes to nearby roads and street parking. In areas where parking is permitted but spaces are not marked, numbers have been estimated based on the length of a standard car space.
Aspendale
Station Street
Room for up to 17 cars will be removed from the parking lane on Station Street, from north of Pine Crescent to James Avenue to ensure the road meets width requirements near the new roundabout.
Pine Crescent
The no-standing zone on the south side of Pine Crescent will be extended east, removing space for up to 4 cars. The pram ramp will be moved further into Pine Crescent to ensure there is enough road space and a safe crossing distance approaching the roundabout.
Nepean Highway
Room for up to 18 cars within the parking lane on Nepean Highway will be removed from Watkins Street to just south of Hearle Avenue to allow for the required road width near the new signalised intersection.
Hearle Avenue
Room for up to 3 cars on Hearle Avenue, east of Hearle Lane, will be reduced to room for one car to allow cars to safely pass one another at the traffic lights.
Mordialloc
Albert Street (south of McDonald Street)
Space for up to 6 cars will be removed opposite the existing station on Albert Street. Space for up to 4 cars will be removed on the station side. Room for up to 6 cars will be available outside Mordialloc Beach Primary School to allow room for the new signalised pedestrian crossing and bus stops, which will be moved to align with the station entrance.
Albert Street (north of McDonald Street)
Fourteen marked car spaces will be removed opposite the rail line between Lewis and McDonald streets. We’ll upgrade and formalise car parking on the rail side of the road between McDonald and Powlett streets to allow room for the rail bridge and new one-way section on Albert Street.
Bear Street
Two marked car spaces between the Bear Street roundabout and the level crossing will be removed. The eight car spaces near the corner of Bear Street and Main Street Service Road will remain.
McDonald Street
Eight marked car spaces between McDonald Street and Main Street Service Road were removed in March 2025 to make room for road changes between Albert Street and the McDonald Street roundabout.
Main Street Service Road
Six marked car spaces south of McDonald Street were removed in March to make space for a new entry to the service road from Main Street/Nepean Highway.
