Mordialloc is now boom gate free, the Station Street level crossing in Aspendale is gone for good and a new elevated Mordialloc Station sits at the heart of a revitalised precinct.

As part of the project, we removed the boom gates at McDonald Street, Mordialloc, to make traffic journeys more reliable and to reduce delays at the level crossing.

We also changed nearby roads to keep traffic moving smoothly and safely through the boom gate-free area and improve access to the new station precinct.

What has changed?

We have:

  • upgraded the McDonald Street and Nepean Highway roundabout by building a new slip lane for vehicles turning left from McDonald Street onto Nepean Highway
  • permanently closed Bear Street to vehicles, while maintaining pedestrian and bike access
  • installed new signalised pedestrian crossings on McDonald Street and Albert Street, making it safer and easier to cross these roads
  • made Albert Street one-way southbound between Lewis and McDonald Streets.

These changes make it easier for people to travel through Mordialloc and access the station, Main Street and the local area.

We worked with the Department of Transport and Planning and Kingston City Council to develop the final road layout, considering traffic flow, safety, accessibility and local amenity.

Getting around the area

Safer and easier travel through Mordialloc

The road changes support the removal of the McDonald Street level crossing and closure of Bear Street and make it safer and easier for people to travel through Mordialloc.

Safety guided the design of the road and pedestrian changes, while improving access to the new Mordialloc Station and station precinct.

The new signalised pedestrian crossings on McDonald Street and Albert Street make it easier and safer to reach Mordialloc Station, nearby businesses and activity centres.

We also changed roads and on-street parking where needed to meet safety requirements for lane widths, sight lines, stopping distances and turning movements.

Your new walking and cycling path

A new 1km walking and cycling path runs through the station precinct offering a safer, easier and more direct route to the station.

Running from the northern station entrance, across the new signalised crossing at McDonald Street and continuing behind Main Street, the path provides connections to Main Street shops and the existing path at the Beach Road roundabout.
