9 April 2025

We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale by building new rail bridges. We’ll also close the level crossing at Bear Street in Mordialloc, and build a brand new Mordialloc Station.

A new elevated premium station will be built in the heart of Mordialloc, featuring modern facilities, all-abilities access, improved lighting, public spaces, and enhanced landscaping. An entrance at each end of the station will provide easier and convenient access for commuters.

The station precinct will celebrate the local character of the area through native planting, colours and materials that reflect Mordialloc’s strong connection to the beach and bayside identity.

The new Mordialloc Station will offer more bike storage than there is currently, and a new walking and cycling path linking the station to shops and the wider area.

Along with changes to nearby roads and pedestrian crossings that will improve safety and keep traffic flowing, using the new station will be easier, safer and better than ever.

Mordialloc will be boom gate free, with a vibrant new station precinct in 2026.

Your new Mordialloc Station precinct

We're creating a new station precinct that celebrates the local area. This includes planting and landscaping that reflect the natural surroundings, protecting the heritage water tower and incorporating the original Platform 1 building into the precinct.

Architectural verandahs

Sculptural verandahs encase the station buildings to bring the station buildings together, inspired by local bayside and creek geography. These verandahs are intended to create a sense of arrival while complementing the landscape.

Heritage water tower

The water tower will be celebrated as a focal point of the station, with landscaping and paths arranged around it in shapes that mimic the flow of water.

Sunken garden feature

A sunken garden in the forecourt will provide a seating area for commuters to pause and connect. The garden will integrate with the station's sustainable water management system. Seating and landscaping will also feature throughout the entire station precinct.

Selecting natural colours

The bridge structures and interior station buildings will feature natural tones including 'Warm Neutral', 'Pale Eucalypt' and off-white shades to complement native vegetation planted throughout the area.

Porcelain tile features in the station concourse will use these natural colours to integrate inside with outside, with the colours lightening as they rise towards the ceiling, highlighting natural light.

Bridge structures, including piers, crossheads, retaining walls and abutments will be painted with these natural tones.

Off-white perforated metal screening will be in place in sections of the station and rail bridge over McDonald Street.

Accessing the station

Walking and cycling

A new 1km walking and cycling path will run through the station precinct and will offer a safer, easier and more direct route to the station.

Running from the northern station entrance, across the new signalised crossing at McDonald Street and continuing behind Main Street, the path will provide connections to Main Street shops and the existing path at the Beach Road roundabout.

The precinct will also include a new Parkiteer with secure storage for 26 bikes and space for 46 bikes on new bike hoops.

Driving

Commuter parking will be consolidated under the new rail bridge, providing easier access to the new station.

Commuters will have access to more than 200 car spaces, including 8 accessible spaces.

Pick-up and drop-off bays will be available on Albert Street.

Bus connections

Bus bays on Albert Street will provide direct and easy access to the station concourse.

Platform access

Lifts and stairs to the single platform will be available at the two station entrances, making catching and changing trains more convenient.

The landscaping design prioritises native, low maintenance, tolerant species that will thrive in the local area.

The station forecourt will feature raised garden beds, seating, and landscaped areas, creating a vibrant and open space.

Landscaping will include:

  • flowering gums
  • river red gums
  • drooping sheoaks

  • banksias.
