Boom gates going and station opening
We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale to deliver faster and safer journey times by building new rail bridges. We’ve already closed the Bear Street, Mordialloc level crossing and are building a new Mordialloc Station.
We’ll remove the level crossings at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale, and open the new elevated Mordialloc Station to passengers on Thursday 21 May after a three-week construction blitz on the Frankston Line.
From the night of Thursday 30 April until the first service on Thursday 21 May, crews will work around the clock to remove the old rail line and boom gates, connect the new rail bridges complete overhead wiring and lay new track. Buses will replace trains during this time.
We’ve kept Frankston Line passengers moving and Mordialloc Station open by running trains in both directions on one track. When Mordialloc Station opens, trains will travel in both directions on the new rail bridges.
There will be new entrances at both ends of the station, making it easier to access the new precinct, and new lifts, toilets, seating and waiting areas ready for use. Finishing works around the station, including landscaping and completing the new car parks, will continue until later this year.
We’ll close McDonald Street between Nepean Highway and Albert Street from Thursday 30 April to Thursday 21 May while we remove the Station Street level crossing, with detours in place. We’ll permanently close the Station Street level crossing at the rail line from Thursday 30 April and open the new link road connecting Station Street to Nepean Highway when trains return on Thursday 21 May.
Why these level crossings need to go
- Around 26,000 vehicles travel through these three level crossings every day
- Boom gates are down for approximately 40 minutes of the morning peak (7am to 9am)
- 33 trains during the morning peak
- 12 near misses and one fatality at these crossings since 2016
Your rail bridges are now complete
Crews have now finished installing the beams for the McDonald Street and Station Street rail bridges and are continuing to work on the Mordialloc station platforms.
From June to September 2025 we drilled more than 180 piles up to 30 metres deep, and poured concrete pile caps, piers and crossheads to form strong foundations for the rail bridges. With the base of the rail bridges in place, we lifted in 31 metre long L‑shaped beams, made locally in western Melbourne, and placed them on top of the piers. Two L‑beams are stitched together with concrete to form a U‑trough. At Mordialloc, 44 L‑beams form 22 U‑troughs. Along with L-beams, we also installed 12 T-beams which will form part of the new elevated platforms.
Big moves in Mordi
To safely move large and heavy beams with precision, we used a remote controlled Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT). The SPMT is made up of 24 wheels which are all individually powered and use hydraulics to lift, lower or turn each individual wheel – keeping loads level and stable even on uneven ground. Each set of wheels can carry up to 60 tonnes, so with over a dozen wheels to work with, the SPMT can carry hundreds of tonnes in a single movement. The SPMT allowed us to move large beams safely and accurately, guiding them through tight spaces and over changing terrain. Its precise steering, flexible wheel movement, and stable platform allowed us to position each beam exactly where it needs to go, in places where conventional equipment cannot operate.
Next stop, your new Mordialloc Station
The new elevated premium station features modern facilities, all-abilities access, improved lighting, public spaces, and enhanced landscaping. An entrance at each end of the station will provide easier and convenient access for rail passengers.
The station precinct will celebrate the local character of the area through native planting, colours and materials that reflect Mordialloc's strong connection to the beach and bayside identity.
The new elevated premium station is taking shape
We have started installing the bases of the elevated platforms, lift shafts and prefabricated station buildings. A total of 30 prefabricated modules are being delivered and installed. These modules vary from one tonne to 40 tonnes and will cover more than 750 square metres when assembled: about the size of three tennis courts.
Station features
When the new station opens in May, passengers will enjoy:
- A 1km shared walking and cycling path through the precinct
- Parkiteer secure bike parking
- Rail passenger car parking under the rail bridge
- Bus stops and pick‑up and drop‑off zones along Albert Street
- Entrances at McDonald and Albert streets for easy access
- Lifts and stairs to platforms
- Air‑conditioned indoor waiting area
- Ticket office and toilets
Improving traffic flow
Constructing the new Pine Crescent link road in Aspendale
When the Station Street rail bridge is complete in May, drivers will no longer cross the rail line at Station Street near Mordialloc College. Instead, they will travel under the bridge via a new link road between Nepean Highway and Station Street, near Pine Crescent.
A new roundabout at Pine Crescent will keep traffic moving between Station Street and Nepean Highway. The design includes a safe left turn from the Pine Crescent link road onto Nepean Highway and a dedicated left turn lane from the Highway. There will be a new signalised intersection on Nepean Highway to manage traffic flow and provide safe access to and from Hearle Avenue. Together, these changes will help drivers move safely and smoothly between the Pine Crescent link road, Station Street and Nepean Highway.

Landscaping
Later this year, we will plant a diverse range of trees, plants and shrubs across the station precinct and the Aspendale area. New green spaces will include seating, landscaped garden beds and a pedestrian and bicycle path.
Throughout Mordialloc and Aspendale, we’ll plant:
- More than 1,000 trees
- Over 85,000 plants, shrubs and grasses
- More than 20 different species of native trees
- Over 100 species of plants and ground cover
Bringing colour to Mordialloc
We teamed up with Mordialloc Beach Primary School to create a vibrant mural for the local Mordialloc community, showcasing what makes Mordialloc unique.
Students from all year levels were invited to draw or paint something that represents the area, with the results now proudly on display near the station.
The mural features iconic local landmarks and themes, including the Mordialloc Station water tower, palm trees, and many, many different drawings of seagulls snatching hot chips.
To view the artwork up close, head down to the lane behind Main Street, left of Bear Street. You'll find it brightening up the fence alongside the rail line.
Mordialloc, be our Valentine?
We’ve been out and about in Mordialloc chatting to locals, answering questions, and thanking the community for their patience during construction – and we’ve bought our wheel of prizes with us!
Locals popped by for a chat and got a chance to spin our Valentine’s Day - themed wheel to win a range of prizes, such as coffees, sweet treats, and a florist gift card to buy their loved one a bouquet to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
We’ll be popping up along Main Street over the coming months (with plenty more themes, and chances to win!) so keep your eyes peeled for an opportunity to spin the wheel and learn more about the project.
Thanks for coming!
In February, we ran the first of many walking tours around our project sites.
During the tour, participants explored several areas and heard directly from senior project engineers about the works underway and what’s planned next.
Thanks to everyone who joined us and showed their interest in the project – it was a pleasure to host you, share insights, and answer your questions.
We look forward to welcoming many more community members in the coming months.

Changes to the way you travel
Buses will replace trains as we get ready to remove the level crossings and complete works on the new station, which will be ready for trains to return on Thursday 21 May. There will also be road and lane closures and changes to pedestrian access. Detours will be in place to keep you moving safely through the area.
Your usual journey may change or take a little longer than normal, so please plan ahead.
