Fast tracking level crossing removals on the Frankston Line

Level crossings removals in Mordialloc and Aspendale are being fast-tracked, paving the way for a boom gate-free Frankston Line.

The Victorian Government is removing 27 dangerous level crossings and building 17 new stations, making the Frankston Line level crossing free.

Local communities will benefit from fast-tracked level crossings removals at:

  • McDonald Street, Mordialloc
  • Bear Street, Mordialloc (closure)
  • Station Street, Aspendale

These level crossings will be gone for good by 2026 – 3 years earlier than expected.

This will reduce the length of boom gate down time when more services run on the line when the Metro Tunnel opens.

Level crossing removal designs

We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale by building new rail bridges.

We’ll also make Bear Street, Mordialloc boom-gate free and closed to vehicles, meaning more opportunities to create a vibrant station precinct with safe access for pedestrians and cyclists.

We’re planning and designing the project throughout 2023, which will involve engaging with communities at key milestones.

Construction will start in 2024 and our teams will work closely with locals during this time.

Why these level crossings need to go

  • Approximately 26,000 vehicles travel over these level crossings each day
  • Boom gates are down for up to 40 minutes of the morning peak (7am to 9am)
  • 33 trains during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
  • 12 near misses at these crossings since 2016 and one fatality

New Mordialloc Station

We’ll build a new modern and accessible Mordialloc Station as part of the McDonald Street level crossing removal project.

The new station will have better facilities and safety features for passengers. The new station will be open by 2026.

Site investigations

As part of our early stages of planning, we’ve been carrying out early site investigation works in your local area, including ecological investigations, heritage surveys and traffic studies. These works help us understand more about the local area and support early works preparation.

We will do further site investigations and engineering work as well as community engagement, which will feed into the designs for the project.

We understand the Mordialloc Creek, coastal environment and Mordialloc Aboriginal Reserve are culturally sensitive, and the project team will work collaboratively with the Registered Aboriginal Party, the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, throughout design and construction.

We want to hear from you

We want to hear what locals love about Mordialloc and Aspendale and what you’d like to see in the new Mordialloc Station precinct. Our online vision and values survey is open until Sunday 23 July, so there is plenty of time for you to have your say.

Your feedback will help shape the early concept designs, alongside technical requirements.

We’ll be popping up in the Mordialloc area late June to late July, so be sure to drop by and say hello.

There will be more opportunities to get involved throughout 2023.

Visit the Mordialloc and Aspendale page on Engage Victoria from Thursday 22 June to 11:59pm Sunday 23 July 2023.
