28 January 2025
We’re removing the level crossings at McDonald Street in Mordialloc and Station Street in Aspendale by building new rail bridges. We’re also removing and closing the Bear Street level crossing in Mordialloc and building a new Mordialloc Station.
Works have begun and crews are continuing to prepare the area for major construction later this year.
What we’re doing
During March, we will:
- complete earthworks and piling in the rail corridor and on Albert Street (south of McDonald Street)
- install new service routes for rail services
- close access to the pedestrian underpass at Mordialloc Station (alternative access provided)
- establish an additional site compound in the Mordialloc Creek carpark (opposite the Bridge Hotel)
- continue demolishing 4 Bear Street, to be used as a site compound
- continue vegetation and tree removal and install temporary fencing along the rail corridor.
Utility companies will relocate services, including electricity, gas and water to make way for construction works. Temporary service interruptions to private properties may occur, and your utility provider will notify you ahead of time.
McDonald Street, Mordialloc closure in March and April
Throughout March and April, we’ll work on McDonald Street, Main Street Service Road and Albert Street in Mordialloc to build a new slip lane onto Nepean Highway, relocate underground utilities and complete additional road works to support traffic changes.
McDonald Street will close to vehicles between Albert Street and Main Street Service Road from Monday 3 March to mid-April. There will be temporary road closures and pedestrian detours to help you move safely through the area. We’ll also temporarily close sections of station and council car parks nearby. Please follow signage and see the map below for more detail.

What to expect
There will be changes to travel, including car parking, road conditions, bus stops and pedestrian paths. You may notice an increase in construction workers and machinery, including moderate noise and vibration at times. Please expect delays on Nepean Highway in both directions, predominantly southbound, and allow extra travel time.
We’ll work 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 7am to 3pm on Saturdays. We’ll also work 24/7:
- early March to early April to complete McDonald Street works
- 8.30pm, Friday 21 March to last service Sunday 23 March in the rail corridor (Mordialloc and Aspendale).
If we need to work outside of these times, we’ll let the community know in advance.
