Parkdale’s transformation is complete!

We're making the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2029, transforming the way locals live, work and travel.

The boom gates are gone for good at Warrigal and Parkers roads and your new Parkdale Station, new open space and community facilities are ready to enjoy.

Over the past few months, our teams have been working hard to put the finishing touches on the project, including resurfacing roads and installing public lighting and active spaces including an open-air gym, playground and shared use path.

We’ve just finished our final landscaping works, planting approximately 100,000 trees, shrubs and grasses in and around the new station precinct.

All works are now complete, marking the end of the Parkdale project.

Project benefits:

  • Two level crossings gone
  • A new Parkdale Station
  • New open space and community facilities
  • Improved connections
  • A greener rail corridor

Thank you Parkdale - Celebrate with us

When: Saturday 24 May, 10am to 1pm

Where: Parkdale Station precinct

Thank you for your ongoing patience and support during our works. We hope you enjoy the new station precinct and community facilities.

Join us to celebrate the completion of level crossing removal works in Parkdale at our FREE community event.

Everyone is invited to come and celebrate!

Looking back at our works

In August 2024, we opened the elevated rail bridge and Parkdale Station for trains and passengers after a 2-week construction blitz.

In the months following, we opened station facilities including all 4 lifts, commuter car parking, new public toilets and the Parkiteer secure bike parking. Ahead of the summer holidays, we opened sections of the new community space including some of the pedestrian and bike path. We also installed 2 eye-catching public sculptures and other community facilities like the public toilets, basketball half-court and street parking.

This year, our team worked hard to finalise the open space including the open-air gym, playground, community garden and gathering spaces. We resurfaced roads and installed pedestrian crossings and public lighting. After the heat of summer, we finished planting throughout the project area, giving the new plants the best chance of thriving.

Your new community facilities

Pedestrian and bike path

The new shared use path enhances connectivity throughout Parkdale, accommodating both pedestrians and cyclists. It also improves access to local traders, schools and the beach. We've also included a bicycle repair station and drinking fountains.

Carparking

Parkdale Station offers 49 all-day rail passenger car parks. As part of the project, we also upgraded 148 time-restricted car spaces along Como Parade East and Como Parade West, as well as parallel parking along the rail corridor.

Bike parking

A new Parkiteer, accommodating up to 26 bikes, has been installed at the station for secure bicycle parking. Bike hoops are also available throughout the precinct, including at the station, the village green and the linear park.

Basketball half-court and open-air gym

Both a basketball half-court and open-air gym are available for locals to enjoy under the new rail bridge. Community consultation showed strong support for both sporting facilities to be included in the project.

Nature-based playground

Located opposite Fifth Street, the nature-based playground consists of a ropes course and hammock where kids can play.

Gathering spaces

Spaces for the community to connect, including seating and drinking fountains and an information trail throughout the linear park.

Parkdale’s new public art

‘Windsong’ by Melbourne artist Anne Ross was installed in the station precinct in December 2024.

The public art consists of 2 bronze sculptures that bring together many elements to reflect the character of Parkdale.

Inspiration for the art included former City of Mordialloc Mayor Shirley Burke, historic local swimmer Annette Kellerman, the local trader precinct, nearby Port Phillip Bay and Parkdale’s 6500-plus pet population.

Take a glimpse into the past

Due to fire damage, we were unable to repurpose the existing Parkdale Station building as originally planned.

Instead, the old Parkdale Station building is celebrated through the installation of an image viewer or stereoscopic box, showing an image of the former station.

You’ll find the image viewer in the new village green.

Putting the ‘park’ in Parkdale

The new Parkdale Station precinct includes around 2 MCGs worth of open space spanning more than 1km, from North of Warrigal Road to South of Parkers Road

Approximately 100,000 trees, shrubs and grasses have been planted in and around the new open space at Parkdale Station. This includes over 750 mature trees to maximise the canopy from day one.

The tree species were selected to respond to the urban character of Parkdale and to help create a resilient and sustainable landscape.

Some of the types of trees and plants that feature in the new precinct include:

  • Drooping Sheoaks
  • Callistemons
  • Kangaroo Thorn
  • Bidgee Widgee
  • Wonga Wonga vine.

We're committed to the successful establishment of the new landscaping. It takes several seasons for new plants to establish, so we'll monitor and maintain new vegetation for 2 years after project completion. We’ll then hand over responsibility to the relevant rail and local government authorities for ongoing management.

Thank you Parkdale Village traders!

While we got on with construction works, we partnered with traders in Parkdale Village to offer promotions and initiatives to keep the community shopping local.

Thank you to the local traders for their collaboration in keeping the precinct vibrant and thriving throughout the works. It was a pleasure to work with them and support this wonderful shopping precinct.

We encourage everyone to continue supporting Parkdale’s traders by shopping local and enjoying everything they have to offer.

Works in Kingston

We’re working towards a level crossing free Frankston Line by 2029.

Works to remove 3 dangerous and congested level crossings in Mordialloc and Aspendale are underway.

Removing these level crossings will reduce congestion, improve safety and pave the way for more capacity on the Frankston Line.

We'll remove the McDonald Street and Station Street level crossings by building new rail bridges and build a new Mordialloc Station. Bear Street will close to vehicles, creating a vibrant station precinct with safe access for pedestrians and cyclists.

We’ve been preparing the area for construction and recently opened a new left slip lane from McDonald Street onto Main Street/Nepean Highway. As our works continue, there may be changes to the way you travel.

Final designs for the project were released in April and major works will begin this year. Mordialloc will be level crossing free in 2026.
