Parkdale Station open and new space underway

We’re making the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2029 and building 17 new stations — improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often.

The boom gates are gone for good at Warrigal and Parkers roads and your new Parkdale Station is now open to passengers, with all four lifts in operation.

We’re continuing work on the new station precinct, including a landscaped forecourt, secure Parkiteer bike storage, car parking and paths that connect you to Parkdale Village and new open space under the rail bridge.

We’re also starting work on the new open space and community facilities. The Parkdale palms have been returned, the walking and cycling path is underway and work has started on the new recreational facilities. See inside for more details.

Works are due to be complete in 2025.

  • A new Parkdale Station
  • New open space and community facilities
  • Improved connections

Parkdale works update

Since the station opened in August, our teams have continued working on the new station precinct and open space.

All lifts and staircases are now open at the station. Rail passenger car parking is set to open in November and our walking and cycling path and community facilities are underway.

Station lifts open

The 4 lifts are now open at the main and northern entrance of Parkdale Station, providing access to both city and Frankston-bound trains.

Car parking

We know parking is important to the community, especially around the Parkdale Village trader precinct.

The 49 all-day commuter car parks and drop off and pick up zone at Parkdale Station will open this month.

In the coming months, we will complete the 148 time-restricted car spaces on Como Parade East between Rogers Street and White Street, as well as on Como Parade West between Cremona Street and White Street.

We will also reinstate the parallel parking along the rail corridor:

  • From Warrigal Road to White Street on Como Parade East
  • From Warrigal Road to Royal Parade on Como Parade West.

Pedestrian crossing

The pedestrian crossing at White Street is now open for locals, connecting Como Parade East and West.

Changes to the way you travel

In the coming months, our teams will also:

  • resurface and line mark roads
  • install street lighting along Como Parade East and Como Parade West
  • continue working on the shared user path and other community facilities.

While we work on the station precinct, there will be some changes to the way you travel to and around the area.

Our Parkdale site will be closed from 20 December for 2 weeks. Our Call Centre will remain open to answer any queries you may have.

New open space

The new open space will connect the station precinct and the local area, maximising green space and natural light.

Our crews are working to complete the walking and cycling path and new gathering places. Work is also underway on community facilities including the nature-based playground, basketball half court, open-air gym and community garden.

When complete, the village green near the station will be the new community heart of Parkdale.

Landscaping

Parkdale’s iconic Canary Island date palms returned to the Parkdale shopping precinct in October. The transplanted banksias, tea trees and she-oaks will also return to Parkdale in early 2025.

We will also plant 100,000 trees, shrubs and grasses in the station precinct and open space.

This includes a mix of native, indigenous and exotic species, as well as flowering gums and mixed coastal planting. We will also plant semi-mature trees, ranging from one to three meters in height.

Planting will be completed into 2025, after the summer heat, to give plants the best chance to thrive.

Parkdale palms have returned!

The 5 Canary Island date palms that went on holiday during our works have returned to Parkdale after more than a year.

In 2023, we temporarily relocated the palms to be cared for at an off-site nursery.

The reinstated palms form part of the extensive landscaping plans for Parkdale. They will help create the new green corridor.

Did you know that we've successfully cared for and returned more than 50 palms along the Frankston Line while we removed level crossings at Glen Huntly, Ormond, McKinnon, Bentleigh, Cheltenham, and Carrum?

Thank you Parkdale!

In September, we hosted a community sausage sizzle to celebrate the new station and to thank you for your patience during our important works.
