9 August 2023

The Victorian Government is removing 27 dangerous level crossings and building 17 new stations, making the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2029 and improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing more trains to run more often. We’re removing the level crossings at Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale, and building a new Parkdale Station.

What we’re doing

Construction will take place 24-hours a day from 12.30am, Saturday 2 September to 3am, Monday 4 September. During this time buses will replace trains to allow works in the rail corridor.

Works will include:

  • temporary drainage works in the rail corridor
  • sheet piling works inside the rail corridor
  • temporary rail track (slew) formation
  • decommissioning of overhead cables and enabling of 22kV underground cables.

What to expect

  • Crews will be accessing site offices, compounds and laydown areas out of hours, including overnight.
  • Moderate to high noise from construction machinery, including excavators.
  • Vibration and noise during installation of sheet piles. Works will be continually monitored to ensure vibrations and noise do not exceed acceptable levels.
  • Traffic management in place near the work sites, with an increase in workers, vehicles, and equipment.

Managing construction impacts

During construction, we actively monitor noise, dust, and vibration levels to ensure they are within Environment Protection Authority (EPA) control guidelines.

  • We minimise noise, using quieter reversing alarms on vehicles and machines, and noise blankets when we can.
  • We use a range of measures to minimise dust to maintain air quality.
  • We use targeted lighting to safely illuminate work areas, with measures in place to prevent light spill.
  • For night works, we will be in touch with any directly affected residents.
  • We will engage with local schools regarding changes to local roads to ensure school students and buses can navigate the area safely.
  • Our Contact Centre operates 24-hours a day. Please call 1800 105 105 or email contact@levelcrossings.vic.gov.au.
