23 February 2024

The Victorian Government is removing 27 dangerous level crossings and building 17 new stations, making the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2029 and improving safety, reducing congestion, and allowing more trains to run more often. We’re removing the level crossings at Warrigal Road, Mentone and Parkers Road, Parkdale, and building a new Parkdale Station.

What we’re doing

During March, we will deliver and install large concrete beams within the rail corridor. These beams will form the new rail bridge.

The concrete beams will be transported to the work site at night on oversize trucks along Como Parade West, via Nepean Highway.

A crane will lift the beams into place. We plan to install four beams each night.

We will also complete:

  • drainage and utility works during the day along Como Parade East and Como Parade West
  • deliver prefabricated buildings
  • civil and earthworks to build the retaining walls and abutments

Works will take place during the following times in sections of the rail corridor:

  • 7am to 6pm Weekdays
  • 7am to 3pm Saturdays
  • 7pm to 7am Sunday to Friday

What to expect

  • Increased activity during the night as large trucks and cranes deliver and install concrete structures
  • Moderate to high noise and vibration from machinery, including cranes, excavators and trucks
  • Minor delays and detours for road, footpath, and lane closures
  • Minor traffic delays near site access gates due to increased truck and trailer movements and deliveries
  • Additional truck movements and vehicles for support crews
  • Temporary lighting in place to safely illuminate targeted work areas during night shifts

Changes to the way you travel – road and pedestrians

  • Como Parade West will close southbound, from Royal Parade to Parkers Road until early August
  • Como Parade West will close in sections from 9pm to 7am in March for the delivery of the concrete beams with detours clearly signed and access to properties maintained
  • Como Parade East will close at the intersection of Peter Avenue for two days in late March
  • Como Parade East will remain closed northbound from Barry Street to Parkers Road until project completion
  • Pedestrian rail crossings will close at Warrigal Road and Parkers Road when required for safe working – local signage will have the latest information

Pedestrian crossing access is likely to change frequently, we strongly suggest checking the website before leaving home.

A shuttle bus will run between Mentone and Mordialloc stations to connect you to trains. There will be additional stops along Como Parade East and Como Parade West in Mentone and Parkdale to help you move around the area. Shuttle bus stops are closed when buses replace trains for planned works.
