Fast tracking level crossing removals in Melton

We’re upgrading the Melton Line, removing seven level crossings, building two new train station and making Melton boom gate-free. This means more services, more often.

Big transport projects are underway in the West, paving the way for more and bigger trains to cater for booming population growth.

Making Melton level crossing-free

Four more level crossings will be gone for good, and a brand new, modern Melton Station open to passengers by 2026 – bringing the projects forward by two years.

Early assessments indicate the level crossings at Coburns Road and Exford Road will be removed by building a new rail trench. Further design development will confirm the design solution. The level crossings at Ferris Road and Hopkins Road will go by building new road bridges. All will be gone for good by 2026.

Making Melton level crossing-free will change how locals live, work and travel. With no level crossings in the area, journeys will be faster and more reliable, and local roads will be safer.

Removing these level crossings means more benefits for local communities and a better transport network for all Victorians.

Melton Line Upgrade

The $650 million Melton Line Upgrade will bring significant improvements and help to transform the transport network.

Platform extensions, station upgrades and additional stabling will enable the introduction of nine-car VLocity trains by 2028.

This increased capacity will reduce crowding on busy services, providing passengers in Melbourne's booming west with more comfortable and reliable services.

Why these crossings need to go

  • Approximately 73,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
  • Boom gates are down for up to 28 minutes of the morning peak (7am to 9am)
  • Up to 16 trains during the morning peak (7am to 9am)

New Melton Station

We'll build a new modern and accessible Melton Station that will support the growing community.

The new station will have better facilities and safety features for passengers.

The new station will be open by 2026.

We look forward to speaking with the community about what they would like to see as part of the new station in the future.

In the meantime, visit our Project page to see lots of examples of other new stations that we have built.

Level crossing gone, new Deer Park Station open

The Mt Derrimut Road level crossing is now gone for good. We've built a new rail bridge over the road so traffic can pass freely underneath.

The new Deer Park Station also opened to passengers in April. The new elevated station platforms have better safety features and facilities for passengers.

We'll continue to work on the finishing touches until 2024.

Project benefits

We're removing 7 level crossings on the Melton line and building 2 new train stations by 2028.

  • Paves the way for more trains and future improvements to the rail line to Melton
  • Melton will be crossing-free by 2028
  • Eases congestion and unclogs local roads
  • The brand new Melton Station will have better facilities for passengers

How we engage with the community

Visions and values

We start by talking to the community about how you move around the area and how you would like to use the space in the future.

Concept designs

We'll release the project design and ask for your feedback. You'll have the opportunity to help refine the designs.

Final designs

We'll show you the final project designs and let you know what to expect during construction.

Construction

We work with the community and local traders to help manage any disruption caused by our works.

Next steps

Community consultation is an important part of every level crossing removal project.

Community and stakeholder feedback helps us refine the design so we can best meet local community needs.

You'll hear more from our teams this year about the removal of these crossings and works needed for the Melton Line Upgrade.

This will include information on how to get involved, project timelines and more detail on further site investigations that will be happening along the Melton Line.

Site investigations

We have started site investigations at Ferris Road and Hopkins Road to gather information about the local area and support design development.

Residents and locals will see workers around the level crossings and rail corridor. These investigations involve crews monitoring and observing the sites and should not be disruptive to the local community.

Building Big in the inner west

The Victorian Government is committed to removing the last five level crossings on the Werribee Line by 2030 – delivering a better transport network for the booming west.

We're making the Werribee line boom gate-free and building a new Spotswood Station.

Four crossings are already gone and now we’ve added another five including:

  • Hudsons Road, Spotswood
  • Maddox Road, Newport
  • Maidstone Street, Altona
  • Anderson Street, Yarraville
  • Champion Road, Newport

Removing these crossings will improve safety, reduce congestion and allows more trains, more often.

New Tarneit West Station

The Victorian Government will build a new Tarneit West Station on Davis Road. It will include a pedestrian crossing, a four-bay bus interchange, and parking for up to 400 commuters.
