A big year for construction in Melton and Truganina

The boom gates will be gone for good at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina and the new elevated Melton Station is opening this year.

The road bridges over the rail line at Ferris and Hopkins roads are nearing completion, delivering safer and more reliable connections to the Western Freeway and newly built residential areas. The rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads are taking shape on either side of the new modern and accessible Melton Station. Removing all four level crossings will eliminate nearly 30 minutes of boom gate down time in the morning peak making journeys in Melton and Truganina safer and saving travel time for 73,000 vehicles each weekday.

When the new Melton Station opens, passengers will benefit from improved facilities, including an air condition waiting room and additional platform shelters. We're also creating better connections with redesigned car parks and a 16 metre wide pedestrian through link, providing access to both sides of the rail line, as well as all four platforms

Project benefits:

  • New modern and accessible Melton Station
  • Improved safety and better connections
  • Boom gates gone for good at Coburns, Exford, Ferris and Hopkins roads
  • Eliminating nearly half an hour of boom gates down time in the morning peak
  • Saving travel time for 73,000 vehicles each weekday

Road bridges taking shape at Ferris and Hopkins roads

We’re building new road bridges over the rail line, creating safer connections to the Western Freeway and newly built residential areas.

In Truganina, the new road bridge is getting close to completion, with facade and railing painting underway in a bright shade of purple. The colour reflects the wildflowers found within Volcanic Plains grasslands nearby. Works to build the new walking and cycling path have begun and landscaping is starting to be planted on the batters, which make up the sloped parts of the road bridge. We'll plant more than 80,000 native grasses, shrubs and tussocks around the new Hopkins Road bridge, as well as spreading a native seed mix over 35,000 square metres of the project area.

At Ferris Road, the team installed the last retaining wall panel on the road bridge. A total of 637 reinforced panels make up the facade, each panel engraved with a wave design. Over the coming months we'll continue to build the main part of the bridge, known as the bridge deck, and the supporting incline structures, known as the approach pavements.

Upcoming Hopkins Road closure

Hopkins Road will be closed between Grand Boulevard and Meskos Road from 9pm, Tuesday 28 April to 1am Monday 18 May with detours in place.

Construction blitz in Melton

In January our crews worked day and night while trains weren't running completing important works for new Melton Station and rail bridges.

At Melton Station eagle eyed community members may have spied the four new elevated platforms and six lift shafts, which along with stairs, will provide access to all four platforms from the pedestrian through link.

At Creek Street, we lifted the bridge beams into place, which will allow us to install the rail bridge beams across Exford Road later this year.

As construction continues, we’ll need to close Coburns and Exford roads at times to complete the new rail bridges and lower a section of Exford Road to provide a height clearance of 4.8 metres under the rail bridge.

At Coburns Road, the clearance under the rail bridge will be 5.9 metres.

To ensure local access is maintained, we won’t close Coburns and Exford roads at the same time. We're taking a staged approach, completing works at one road before starting at the next

We’ll be coming out with more information about future works closer to the date so you can stay informed and plan ahead.

Getting ready for longer trains

We're delivering the Melton Line Upgrade to boost passenger capacity on peak services by 50 per cent from 2027 - one year ahead of schedule.

To allow the longer nine-car VLocity trains to stop at some of the busiest stations on the line, we’ve extended the platforms at Caroline Springs and Deer Park stations, with platform extensions at Rockbank and Cobblebank stations taking place later this year.

To enable new nine-car trains running between Melton and Southern Cross, the new, modern and accessible Melton Station will open with longer platforms to accommodate nine-car VLocity trains.

As part of the Melton Line Upgrade, we're building a new, future-proofed train stabling yard at Cobblebank to house the new trains. The new yard, 700 metres east of the new Melton Station, will enable trains to be at Melton, ready for first services to Southern Cross. The Cobblebank yard is being future-proofed to cater to high-capacity Metro trains when the Melton Line is electrified.
