Final station and bridge designs released

We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free.

We’re also building a new, accessible Melton Station with modern facilities for passengers.

Final designs have been released for the new Melton Station, the rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads and the road bridges over the rail line at Ferris and Hopkins roads.

Your feedback has helped shape these designs.

We'll build a new modern, elevated Melton Station with 4 platforms paving the way for future improvements to the line and increased train capacity along the rail corridor.

Removing the 4 level crossings will improve safety and ease congestion for drivers in Melton and Truganina.

Travel around Melton will be improved, with drivers no longer held up by the boom gates on Coburns and Exford roads.

At Ferris and Hopkins roads, drivers, pedestrians and bike riders will benefit from the new road bridges with shared paths making journeys safer for some of the fastest growing communities in Australia.

Early works are underway and construction will begin later this year, with all 4 sets of boom gates gone and trains running to the new Melton Station in 2026, 2 years ahead of schedule.

Why these crossings need to go

• Approximately 73,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
• Boom gates are down for up to 28 minutes during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
• Up to 16 trains travel through these crossings during the morning peak (7am to 9am)

Your new Melton Station coming in 2026

We heard you want a station that reflects the surrounding area with better connections and improved safety and security throughout the precinct.

Your feedback has helped shape the final designs for your new Melton Station.

Designed for the future

The new Melton Station will feature 4 elevated platforms, paving the way for future improvements to the line.

We'll also build longer station platforms, ready for 9 car VLocity trains to run from 2028, increasing passenger capacity by 50%, reducing crowding on busy services.

An enclosed, air-conditioned waiting room will be close to the stairs and lifts to the elevated platforms. New undercover areas on the platforms will provide shelter from the elements.

Passenger information displays and signage throughout the station will make it easier for passengers to get to their destination.

Better connections

We heard you want convenient and safe connections throughout the station precinct.

The station will feature 2 entrances, one on each side of the rail line, with direct access to car parks.

A new 16m wide pedestrian through link will connect both entrances to the platforms, linking both sides of the community, providing direct pedestrian access from Staughton Street in the south to Brooklyn Road in the north.

New pedestrian and bike paths will make it easier to walk and ride to the station, with secure Parkiteer bike storage and bike hoops included in the precinct.

We’re building a new multi-bay bus interchange near the Melbourne bound platforms, creating easier and safer connections between train and bus services.

Safety and parking

We heard safety was a key concern.

We'll install enhanced lighting and CCTV throughout the precinct, and we'll improve sight lines between staffed areas and the station entrances to discourage antisocial behaviour and to enhance safety.

We've redesigned the station car parks, with most car parking conveniently accessed from Brooklyn Road, making it easier to catch the train towards Melbourne.

The new car parks will have:

• wider entrances and exits
• improved layouts
• dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones on both sides of the station to reduce traffic in the car parks.

Landscaping and new community space

You told us you want new community spaces where people can gather and relax.

At the corner of Brooklyn and Exford roads, we’ll create a welcoming area with seating in the shade provided by the existing trees.

The design reflects community feedback with a spacious landscaped forecourt featuring a mix of native and indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses.

We’ll select plant species that are suited to the local area and conditions to ensure their long-term viability and fit with the local flora and fauna.

• Enclosed, air-conditioned waiting room with toilets
• Four elevated platforms with seating and standing areas protected from the weather
• Extended platforms for 9 car VLocity trains
• Staff ticketed office
• Lifts and stairs making it more accessible for everyone to catch the train
• 16m wide pedestrian through link with 2 station entries for convenient access
• Security cameras, more lighting and bike and pedestrian paths to create a safer station precinct
• Sealed car parks with 940 spaces with access off Brooklyn Road and Staughton Street
• New multi-bay bus interchange off Brooklyn Road
• Pick-up and drop-off zones and taxi spaces on both sides of the elevated rail line
• Spacious, landscaped forecourt and shaded community space off Brooklyn Road
• A secure bike storage Parkiteer and bike hoops

Removing the level crossings

We heard traffic congestion is a common frustration, especially during peak hours and school pick-up and drop-off times.

Removing these 4 level crossings will make journeys faster, safer and more reliable for the 73,000 drivers that pass through these crossings each day.

All 4 sets of boom gates will be gone in 2026.

Rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads

We're removing these level crossings by building new rail bridges over the roads, connecting to the new elevated Melton Station.

During consultation, we heard trees and vegetation are important to the community.

Building rail bridges over the roads allow us to retain more of the existing trees and vegetation.

We'll build new shared paths under the bridges, alongside the roads with lighting, creating safer connections for pedestrians and bike riders.

To minimise disruptions for the community, we'll build the new rail bridges as we construct the new Melton Station, limiting the impacts to train services and the roads.

Your new road bridges at Ferris and Hopkins roads

We're removing the level crossings at Ferris and Hopkins roads by building new road bridges over the rail line, creating safer connections to the Western Freeway and newly built residential areas.

Your feedback has helped shaped the designs and landscaping aspects of the Ferris and Hopkins road bridges.

Building for the future

We heard you want a design to support the future growth of the area.

We’re future proofing the road bridge designs to support this by allowing room for additional train tracks, extra road lanes and pedestrian connections. We’re also relocating underground services to help minimise future disruptions.

This paves the way for future rail and road upgrades when required with minimal disruptions to the community.

Better connections

We heard you want better walking and cycling connections.

We’re building new walking and cycling paths along the road bridges at Ferris and Hopkins roads, linking to existing paths where possible, creating safer connections and more ways to get around.

Urban design and landscaping

We heard that you want a natural look and feel on the new infrastructure that reflects the local area and whilst enhancing the vibrant character.

At Hopkins Road, the design and colour on the road bridge screens was selected to reflect the wildflowers commonly found within Volcanic Plains grasslands.

At Ferris Road, the design celebrates the natural look and feel of the surrounding environment.

The patterns on the Ferris Road bridge and symbols to be used throughout a new community gathering space illustrate trees and water.

In April and May, we asked the Melton and Truganina communities to share their ideas on concept designs.

We received more than 900 pieces of feedback which helped us shape the final designs.

We heard the following is important to you:

• More reliable travel time around Melton and Truganina and more free flowing traffic without being held up by the boom gates.
• Improved connections and easier access for pedestrians and bike riders moving around the area.
• Better passenger facilities at the new Melton Station, including more seating, shaded areas and protection from the elements.
• Designs that prioritise safety.
• Landscaped areas featuring a range of native and indigenous plants, trees and grasses.
