We’re making Melton level crossing-free and building a brand new Melton Station

The Victorian Government is committed to removing 4 more level crossings around Melton by 2028 – supporting one of Melbourne's fastest growing communities.

We're removing 7 level crossings between the city and Melton. 2 are already gone, 1 is going and now we have added another 4 including:

  • Coburns Road, Melton
  • Exford Road, Melton
  • Ferris Road, Melton
  • Hopkins Road, Truganina

Removing these crossings will improve safety and reduce congestion.

It also paves the way for more trains and future improvements to the rail line to Melton.

Brand new Melton Station

We'll build a brand new Melton Station that will provide better facilities for passengers.

The new modern station will support the growing community with a new platform, greater accessibility, better lighting and more safety features.

Better transport, less congestion

Making Melton level crossing-free will change how locals live, work and travel. With no level crossings in the area, journeys will be faster and more reliable, and local roads will be safer.

Removing these level crossings means more benefits for local communities and a better transport network for all Victorians.

Building on the Ballarat Line Upgrade

The Ballarat Line Upgrade was completed in early 2021, delivering an extra 140 weekly services to Melton Station.

Why these crossings need to go

  • Approximately 73,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
  • Boom gates are down for up to 28 minutes of the morning peak (7am to 9am)
  • Up to 16 trains during the morning peak (7am to 9am)

Project benefits

We're removing 7 level crossings on the Melton line and building 2 new train stations by 2028.

  • Paves the way for more trains and future improvements to the rail line to Melton
  • Melton will be crossing-free by 2028
  • Eases congestion and unclogs local roads
  • The brand new Melton Station will have better facilities for passengers

The best designs

At Exford Road and Coburns Road in Melton a new rail trench will deliver the best outcome for the community.

A rail trench will:

  • provide better connections to the Western Freeway and reduce daily travel times
  • create better connections for people travelling around Melton

At Hopkins Road, Truganina and Ferris Road, Melton, new road bridges will deliver the best outcome for the community.

A road bridge at Ferris Road will:

  • help traffic travel along this busy road
  • allow better access to the new Cobblebank Station

Closer to the city, a road bridge at Hopkins Road will:

  • help traffic, including trucks get to and from the growing industrial centre and the Western Highway

We are in the very early stages of project design. Further detailed design, engineering assessments and community engagement will be undertaken on all these projects.

Next steps

You'll hear more from our teams next year about the removal of these crossings.

This will include information on how to get involved, project timelines and what early investigations will be happening in your area.
