Coburns Road closures and night works

We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free in 2026. We’re also building a new modern and accessible Melton Station.

What we’re doing

We’ll be closing Coburns Road at the level crossing at times in December to continue building the new rail bridge. Detours will be in place. Visit the disruptions map for closure dates and times.

We’ll also be working within the rail corridor at night to install rail bridge retaining wall segments from 9pm to 4am each night from Sunday 7 December to Wednesday 10 December.

While we complete these works there will be service changes on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines from 9pm, Sunday 7 December to last service, Tuesday 9 December.

Where and when we’ll be working

• Coburns Road closed to pour concrete into the new rail bridge, between Staughton Street and James Melrose Drive from  9am to 3pm, as required from Monday 1 December to Friday 19 December
• In the rail corridor from Exford Road to Toolern Creek from 9pm to 4am, each night Sunday 7 December to Wednesday 10 December to install the rail bridge retaining wall.

What to expect

• Traffic delays due to road closures
• An increase in noise and traffic movement in the area
• Increased construction workers and vehicles in the area
• Additional lighting and noise at night
• Dust to be minimised with watercarts

Traffic management and signage will be in place during closures to help you move around the area. Access to homes, schools and businesses will be maintained with detours in place.

We’ll make every effort to complete works on schedule; however dates and times are subject to change.

End of year shutdown period

There will be no construction activity during the holiday period. Works will finish on Friday 19 December and begin again on Monday 5 January 2026.
