We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free in 2026. We’re also building a new modern and accessible Melton Station.

We’re removing the level crossing at Hopkins Road by building a new road bridge over the rail line. Works to construct the foundations of the road bridge are underway and road barriers now installed along the project area.

What we’re doing

  • Continuing earthworks and transporting large vehicles and machinery to site.
  • Relocating existing services in the area and removing redundant power poles.
  • Installing new drainage connections.
  • Upgrading the rail track near the level crossing.
  • Continuing piling in the project area and commencing the construction of road bridge foundations and walls.

Changed traffic conditions on Hopkins Road

Road safety barriers and screens have now been installed along the western side of Hopkins Road between Grand Boulevard and Meskos Road, with changed traffic conditions now in place. These changes include:

  • a reduced speed limit of 40kph when travelling in both directions through the project area
  • a reduced lane width when travelling in both directions through the project area. Please follow signage in place on Hopkins Road.

Upcoming disruptions

24/7 works

  • Crews will work 24/7 in the rail corridor from 7pm, Wednesday 29 January until 6pm, Tuesday 4 February.
  • Impacted residents and stakeholders will be notified directly.

Rail

  • There will be service changes on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines between Bacchus Marsh and Southern Cross from first service Thursday 30 January until last service Monday 3 February.

What to expect

  • Increased construction personnel, vehicles, and equipment in the area.
  • Increased noise, dust and vibration.
  • Traffic management including lane closures and reduced speed limits at times.
  • Minor delays may be experienced on Hopkins Road near the level crossing, to move crucial rail infrastructure safely through the area.
  • General working hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm and Saturday from 7am to 3pm.
