We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free in 2026.

We’re removing the level crossing at Ferris Road by building a new road bridge over the rail line.

Removing all 4 level crossings will eliminate nearly 30 minutes of boom gate down time in the morning peak making journeys in Melton and Truganina safer and saving travel time for 73,000 vehicles each weekday.

We’re also building a new modern and accessible Melton Station.

What we’re doing

In May, works will include:

  • service investigations along Ferris Road, Coach Street and Hollingsworth Drive
  • pavement works
  • painting the road bridge panels and barriers
  • landscaping in the area.

Changes to the way you travel

Rail

  • Service changes on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines from 10pm, Tuesday 26 May until last service Friday 29 May. Please allow extra travel time and visit Transport Victoria for more information and to plan your journey.

Road

  • Ferris Road southbound lane closed between Abey Road and Shogaki Drive intersection and Hollingsworth Drive and Coach Street intersection between 8pm and 5am from Sunday 31 May to Thursday 4 June. Detours will be in place via Abey, Exford and Bridge roads. Allow extra time for travel.

What to expect

  • Until late 2026, there will be a long-term pedestrian closure along Ferris Road and surrounding areas with detours in place.
  • Traffic management, including intermittent stops, lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place at times. Delays may be experienced.
  • Increase in construction vehicles, works crews, large machinery and deliveries.
  • You may experience an increase in construction noise, light and vibration.
  • Unforeseen weather conditions may affect our progress and require additional works outside of normal hours. We’ll contact impacted stakeholders prior to any work commencing.
