We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free in 2026. We’re also building a new modern and accessible Melton Station.

We’re removing the level crossing at Ferris Road by building a new road bridge over the rail line. Over the coming months, we will install the bridge beams, begin construction of the bridge deck and construct the retaining walls.

Upcoming 24/7 works

To install the concrete bridge beams and continue to build the new road bridge, we’ll need to work 24/7 at times in August and September:

  • 7pm, Friday 29 August until 7am, Sunday 31 August.
  • 7pm, Wednesday 3 September until 7am, Monday 15 September.

We’ll also need to work 24/7 at times in October. We’ll notify impacted stakeholders ahead of works and minimise disruptions where possible.

Cobblebank Station car space closures:

We’ll close approximately 175 car spaces at Cobblebank Station from Saturday 6 September to Sunday 14 September when the rail line is closed for both Ferris Road level crossing removal works and Melton Line Upgrade works. There will be V/Line service changes on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines.

Changes to the way you travel

Rail

  • Buses replace trains between Bacchus Marsh and Sunshine, passengers then transfer to a metro train between Sunshine and Southern Cross, from first service, Saturday 30 August to last service, Sunday 31 August.
  • Buses replace trains between Bacchus Marsh and Caroline Springs from first service, Saturday 6 September to last service, Sunday 14 September. Coaches replace trains between Ballarat and Southern crossing for evening services on Sunday 14 September.

Road

  • Southbound lane on Ferris Road closed between Abey Road and Hollingsworth Drive at times between 7pm and 7am, from Wednesday 3 September to Monday 15 September.

What to expect

  • Until late 2026, there will be a long-term pedestrian closure along Ferris Road with detours in place.
  • Traffic management, including intermittent lane closures and reduced speed limits, will be in place at times. Minor delays may be experienced.
  • Increase in construction vehicles, works crews, large machinery and deliveries.
  • You may experience an increase in construction noise, light and vibration.
  • Unforeseen weather conditions may affect our progress and require additional works or for us to work outside of regular working hours. We’ll contact impacted stakeholders if dates change.
