We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free in 2026. We’re also building a new modern and accessible Melton Station.

We’re removing the level crossing at Hopkins Road by constructing a new road bridge over the rail line.

We’ll work from 10pm, Tuesday 26 May to 4am, Friday 29 May, while trains aren’t running to permanently remove the boom gates and decommission the level crossing. The new road bridge will remain open to traffic during these works.

Changes to the way you travel

Rail

  • Service changes to the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines from 10pm, Tuesday 26 May until last service Friday 29 May. Please allow extra time for your journey and plan ahead by visiting Transport Victoria.

Road

  • Hopkins Road will be closed from 9pm, Tuesday 28 April to 1am, Monday 18 May between Grand Boulevard and Meskos Road.
    • Access to local homes and businesses will be maintained during works.
    • Detours will be in place via Leakes Road, Troups Road, Dohertys Road and Robinsons Road.
    • Allow extra time for travel.

24/7 works

  • From 9pm, Tuesday 28 April to 1am, Monday 18 May to complete works on the new road bridge.
  • From 10pm, Tuesday 26 May to 4am Friday 29 May to complete critical works in the rail corridor.

What to expect

  • Detours and reduced speed limits as well as increased construction personnel, vehicles and equipment in the area.
  • Lighting for safe working conditions at night and increased noise, dust and vibration.
  • Traffic management, including lane closures and reduced speed limits at times.
  • General working hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm and Saturday, from 7am to 3pm, with some out of hours works necessary at times.
