We’re removing 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton, and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free in 2026. We’re also building a new modern and accessible Melton Station.

What we’re doing

From Tuesday 14 January 2025, we’re starting construction on the Melton level crossing removal project. Across January and February works will include installation of underground services, relocation of utilities, vegetation removal and the start of the new station build. During these works, there will be rail, road, pedestrian and car park impacts.

Works and disruptions

24/7 works

• From 1.45am, Thursday 30 January to 4am, Tuesday 4 February 2025, we’ll work 24 hours a day to complete works in and around the rail corridor.
• Impacted residents and stakeholders will be notified directly

Rail

• Coaches and buses replace trains on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines between Bacchus Marsh and Southern Cross from first service Thursday 30 January to last service Monday 3 February. 
• Visit the PTV website for more information and to plan your journey. Please allow extra travel time.

Melton Station car parks

• From Tuesday 14 January, additional car spaces will be removed in the Staughton Street car park, so we can start works to build the new station. These car spaces will remain closed for the duration of the project.

Vegetation removal

• As part of the construction of the new Melton Station and rail bridges, vegetation removal is required.
• While vegetation removal takes place, there will be temporary disruptions to the Melton Station car park on Brooklyn Road.

What to expect

• An increase in noise and traffic movement in the area.
• Pedestrian detours around the Melton Station precinct, please follow signs and traffic controller’s directions.
• Permanent closure of some car spaces at Melton Station.
• Intermittent lane closures around the Melton Station precinct.
• Works taking place 24 hours a day while coaches replace trains on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines.

End of year shutdown period

• There will be no construction activity during the holiday period. Works will finish on Friday 20 December and begin on Tuesday 14 January 2025.
