Early works begin at Mt Derrimut Road

We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road, Deer Park and building a new station at Deer Park.

Planning is well underway to remove the level crossing, and we'll be ready to share final designs with the community later this year.

We’ll remove the level crossing by elevating the rail line over the road, and we’ll build a new Deer Park Station with car parking, bike facilities and landscaping.

Elevating the rail line will increase space below the tracks, making it safer and easier for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to move around.

To prepare for major construction later this year, we'll work around the clock from Saturday 17 July to Monday 26 July to install fencing and relocate underground utility services within the rail corridor and on Mt Derrimut Road.

Works will also continue throughout July on the nearby Fitzgerald Road and Robinsons Road level crossings.

Project benefits

  • Improved safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists
  • A more reliable road network
  • Better connections and travel times
  • Paving the way for future transport upgrades

Changes to Deer Park Station

During these works, we’ll remove the pedestrian access path and western entrance to the platforms at Deer Park Station, and we’ll also upgrade the Mt Derrimut Road pedestrian access path to the platforms.

Passengers will access the station and platforms from Mt Derrimut Road only from Monday 26 July onwards.

We’ll move the 5-minute drop-off zone and accessible parking bays closer to Mt Derrimut Road to make it easier for passengers to access the station while we work.

Changes to how you travel

Road

There’ll be off-peak lane closures and reduced speed limits on Mt Derrimut Road while heavy vehicles enter and exit the laydown area. Traffic management and signage will be in place to guide you through the area safely.

Robinsons Road will be closed from 9pm Friday 16 July to 5am Monday 26 July, with detours via Western Freeway, Western Highway and Station Road.

There will be a temporary closure of the pedestrian level crossing on Robinsons Road from 9pm Friday 16 July to 5am Monday 26 July. A shuttle bus will be available from 7am to 7pm daily to move pedestrians to the north and south side of the rail line.

There will also be intermittent lane closures on Robinsons Road and Westwood Drive throughout July.

Fitzgerald Road will be closed from 9pm Friday 16 July to 5am Friday 23 July, with detours via Tilburn Road, Mt Derrimut Road and Boundary Road.

Detours will be in place for bus routes 420, 427 and the night bus service throughout July.

Rail

Coaches will replace all Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough line trains between Southern Cross and Melton from Saturday 17 July to Sunday 25 July.

Thank you for your feedback

We recently completed the first phase of community consultation for the Mt Derrimut Road Level Crossing Removal Project.

Local insights and feedback on the project were provided by a broad section of the community. We received more than 550 responses.

Community feedback

  • Greenery – more greenery around the station precinct to create a more visually appealing space
  • Safety – design to include CCTV, lighting and security so commuters feel safe when using the station and moving through the area
  • Pedestrian and cyclist access – improved pedestrian and cycling connections around Deer Park Station

Thank you to everyone who contributed. Your feedback will be used by the project team to inform the final designs for the rail bridge, new station and surrounding precinct, which we’ll present to the community later this year.

The full consultation summary report will be available on our website in late July.

Other projects in your area

Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer and Robinsons Road in Deer Park have been fast-tracked for removal in 2023.

  • At Fitzgerald Road, we’ll build a new road bridge over the rail line.
  • At Robinsons Road, we’ll build an underpass for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

When all 3 level crossings are gone, the area will be safer, less congested and easier to get around.
