What's happening
Burke Road closure
Burke Road will be closed at the level crossing between Wills Street and King Street (near Gardiner Station) from the evening of Tuesday 5 January until the morning of Wednesday 13 January 2016.
The closure is required to remove the level crossing from across Burke Road, reconstruct the tram line and reinstate the road. Please see more details below.
Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes during the closure. Some temporary parking changes are required on local roads to allow traffic to flow more freely.
Access to local businesses and properties along Burke Road (near Gardiner Station) will be maintained at all times via Malvern Road.
Travel changes
Glen Waverley disruptions
Buses will replace trains on the Glen Waverley Line from Saturday 2 January to Sunday 17 January 2016, between Burnley Station and Glen Waverley Station.
Normal train services will resume on Monday 18 January from the new Gardiner Station.
Road disruptions
On Saturday 2 January, Malvern Road will be open to outbound traffic only between Osborne Avenue and Burke Road. An inbound detour route will be in place via High Street and Tooronga Road. These temporary changes are required for tram upgrade works.
Tram disruptions
Buses will replace trams on Route 72 tram services between Stop 43 Glenferrie/Malvern Road and Camberwell on Saturday 2 January and between Thursday 7 January and Monday 11 January (from first to last tram). Normal tram services will resume from Tuesday 12 January. For journey planning and service information visit ptv.vic.gov.au or call 1800 800 007.
Carroll Crescent
- Works have continued on Carroll Crescent to realign and construct the road at the intersection of Burke Road.
- The intersection will be reopened to traffic from late January with one lane each way and access to Burke Road and Wills Street. We would like to thank local residents for their patience during this closure.
Gardiner Station
- During the closure of the Glen Waverley line in January the project team will remove the existing track, complete the associated earthworks, then install the new track and connect it into the Glen Waverley line.
- The existing Gardiner Station building will be demolished and the signal hut will be relocated within the station precinct.
Gardiner Station car park
- The bridge deck for the underpass to Carroll Crescent has been constructed. This will allow for the earthworks and ground reinforcement in early 2016 to create the access to the new station car park under the rail line (across from Clarke Street).
- Construction of the new car park will start in January with activities including; installation of the retaining walls and the drainage line, road works (asphalting, kerbing and linemarking) and installation of lighting and CCTV equipment.
Burke Road milestones
The project team achieved a major milestone, breaking through the ground underneath Burke Road on 24 November. The team is now focused on completing the new rail infrastructure under Burke Road.
Significant progress was also achieved on the Gardiner Station building. The roofing was installed, along with the stairs to the lowered platform in November. Construction of the lowered platforms was completed in early December including installation of the canopies and payment devices.
Summary of out-of-hours activities
